Seahawks: 6-5, 2nd place NFC WEST

An NFC West battle of the growing and the shrinking.  The NFC West was tense for a few weeks until the reigning Super Bowl Champs simply stopped being a threat to anyone.  Suddenly the team that finished last last season and made a dramatic trade of a legendary Quarterback… flew into first place with a career backup as the starting quarterback and a bunch of rookies shining on defense.  Then it all changed.  The Super Bowl Champs were not only not a threat.. They were now one of the worst teams in the league… and the Shining first place teams discovered rookies hit a wall… now both teams are not in first place… and the drama is all gone.  The Seattle Seahawks have eaten their fill this season.  Lots of early wins.. Lots of high-fives, but it is starting to look like a mirage as the team has regressed to the mean.  QB Geno Smith has been fantastic but is starting to show why he has never been a starting quarterback on a winning club.  He is limited.  The Seahawks defense that looked stout is starting to look like a unit populated almost entirely with rookies.  The Los Angeles Rams lost several key players after their Super Bowl win last season… They have also had injuries to QB Matthew Stafford and the team’s best weapon WR Cooper Kupp.  They weren’t winning this year with those guys… now they are not winning without those guys.  The Rams still have the best defensive lineman in the game in DT Aaron Donald… but he is much less effective without pressure coming from the other side as he had for years with Robert Quinn or Von Miller or any number of quality lineman that have come and gone.  Aaron Donald is now the best TRADE piece the Rams have.. He would return a plethora of picks this offseason if the Rams decide to rebuild in a hurry to make the most of QB Matthew Stafford and WR Cooper Kupp while they are still effective… You can throw DB Jalen Ramsey into the equation also. 

The Seattle Seahawks are on a 2-game losing streak.  They very sadly lost their last game to the Las Vegas Raiders 40-34 in overtime, maybe the west team in the league. In that game Geno Smith went 27 of 37 passing for 328 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.  They also got 2 rushing TDs from RB Kenneth Walker III… The Seattle defense simply did not hold on the other side of the ball.  Giving up 3 passing TDs from Derek Carr and 2 rushing TDs from Josh Jacobs… they were a sieve.

The Los Angeles Rams can still boast that they are the reigning Champs for a few more months.  However they are in last place in their division and almost last place in the league.  The Rams are on a 5-game losing streak.  Head Coach Sean McVay flirted with leaving the Rams for the broadcast booth and possibly should have done it.. Si9nce he has no influence on the game being played whatsoever… He went from boy wonder who pulled all the tricks, to stodgy old dog who does everything conservatively  in the span of 3 years.  Winning does a lot for the reputations and careers of coaches… losing should have the same effect.  Sean McVay was the worst part of the Rams season.  He runs along the sideline in tight shirts hoping he is the most recognizable face in football and it has been pathetic this season.  The Rams ultimately failed when they signed Allen Robinson II to a 30 million guaranteed contract over 3 seasons and failed to restock the offensive line… which they could have easily done with that same money… yuck, it has been a fast fall.

The Seattle defense is 30th in defense of total yards with 388.7 per game allowed, 23rd in passing yards allowed with 234.9 per game, 29th in rushing yards allowed with 153.8 per game, and 28th in points allowed with 25.5 per game.

The Rams defense is 10th in defense of total yards with 323.4 allowed per game, 20th in defense of passing yards with 226.1 per game allowed, 4th in defense of rushing yards with 97.3 allowed per game, and 18th in defense of scoring with 23 points per game allowed.

Our prediction for Sunday, December 4th is…. Seahawks 21 - Rams 18

 

Bet on the Rams to cover the 8 point spread!  It is not about winning for the Rams… but when they go into a game with a MUCH better defense and an odd offense… then you have to see that the Rams are capable of covering a TD plus 1 point.  You also have to see the desperation of the Seahawks to win would mean that in a close 4th quarter… They simply won’t take many chances outside of getting the next first down.
