A wonderfully deceptive American Football Conference matchup.  The 1-1 Jets are riding high!... Because the Jets won a game.  The 0-2 Cincinnati Bengals are riding low because they have not won any games.  After two games this isn’t such a grand statement… unless you glare in Vegas’s direction to see that the spread is only -6 in favor of the Bengals.  That is crazy if you saw either of these teams play the last 18 months.  The Jets are supposed to stink while the Bengals are supposed to be the class of the AFC.  So what gives?... Does QB Joe Burrow of the Bengals NEED more protection… or is he holding the ball far too long.  The guy has been the victim of 13 sacks in two games… He is on pace (it’s a long season) to be the most single season sacked QB of all time… if the Bengals keep giving up 6.5 sacks per game.  The Jets on the other hand had QB Joe Flacco (a super bowl ring possessing back-up) after floundering for 3 ¾ quarters last week.  Flacco scored two touchdowns in 2:32 to win the game by a single point.  Are the Jets good?... We have absolutely no way of knowing!  However, are they improving in various p-laces like pass protection and defensive line?  Yes.  The question here is one of guts… what does your gut say about these two teams that will get you to bet for or against Joe Burrow?

The Cincinnati Bengals have had an atrocious last 3 games.  Two of those were early season losses… the third was a Super Bowl loss.  In fact last week the Bengals lost to the Dallas Cowboys who were starting COOPER RUSH at quarterback.  The Cowboys were declared dead after game 1 yet the Bengals could not get the win.  The Bengals need pass protection for Joe Burrow for sure… but also Joe is holding the ball WAY TOO long.  The air of hometown hero has gone to Joe’s head and he is trying to hit home runs from the pocket.  This falls on Coach Zac Taylor… he will have to find a way to get the running game and the QUICK passing game going.  He must get creative!  Cause a few more sacks and Joe will start spending time in the dreaded blue tent.  If the Bengals could put a defense on their heels Joe will get his pocket back.  It’s that simple, but obviously harder to do than say.

The New York Jets got a win!  Their offensive numbers are all over the map.  3rd in passing yards while 23rd in rushing yards… not very balanced.  8th in total yards… but 17th in points… not very balanced.  Another place to highlight the head coach… If Robert Saleh could find balance in those numbers.. This may be a surprisingly good team.  The Jets defense is slightly behind the middle of the pack… so you can’t rely on the defense… even though we finally get to see what it is like to have LB Carl Lawson and DE Quinnen Williams on the field at the same time… eh.  It will take an offensive renaissance to rebirth this team… Does Flacco have enough magic?  Will the team be given back to underwhelming young guy Zac Wilson in a few weeks?

Bengals vs Jets Prediction

Our prediction for Sunday, September 25th is…. Bengals 28 - Jets 17

The bet is for the Bengals.  We have to tell the truth about what we have seen.  The Bengals defense is good, the offense has sputtered a bit at crucial times.  Plus the Jets are an on-sides kick away from being 0-2 themselves.  Sometimes the lucky bounce benefits a team… but the Jets defense can not hang with the Bengals offense if the Bengals have made ANY adjustments.  If the Begals do not come through this week… they will be out of the conversation for quite awhile.  That is a bet worth a full unit.

NFL Betting Trends

The Bengals are 8-2 ATS after 2 or more consecutive losses the last 3 seasons.
The Jets are 2-8 as a home underdog of 7 points or less the last 3 seasons.

Key Injuries

The Begals came out of Week 2 banged up, TE D Asiasi Prob ** TE H Hurst Quest ** LB G Pratt Quest ** T L Collins Quest ** TE D Sample Quest **... these guys will rest & rehab and probably all play come Sunday.

The Jets came out of Week 2 with a scary prospect of maybe not having DL Quinnen Williams because of a foot injury.  Word is he will probably play even though he is listed as Quest.

Players to Watch

Begals:  QB Joe Burrow.  There is no more important person to a Bengals win.  If Joe finds himself staring at the ceiling covered in defensive lineman AGAIN?... Then something is clearly wrong in Cincinnati!

Jets:  QB Joe Flacco.  Flacco has a ring.  Flacco has graying hair around his temples.  Flacco has nothing to lose.  If Joe Flacco plays great all season long he will get high fives and pats on the butt and he will still be a year away from a rocking chair on the porch.  He will let the ball fly.

Starting Lineups

Bengals: QB Joe Burrow, HB Joe Mixon, WR Ja’Marr Chase, WR Tee Higgins, TE Hayden Hurst, TE Drew Sample, LT Jonah Williams, LG Cordell Volson, C Ted Karras, RG Alec Cappa, RT La’el Collins

Jets: QB Joe Flacco, RB Michael Carter, WR Elijah Moore, WR Garrett Wilson, WR Corey Davis, TE Tyler Conklin, LT George Fant, LG Laken Tomlinson, C Connor McGovern, RG Alijah Vera Tucker, RT Max Mitchell

Weather Forecast

Scattered showers, Humidity 59%, Precipitation chance 50%, Wind 9 mph.  More weather for this NFL season.  Ho-hum.  Somebody tell the billionaire owners that they all need domes and lets get on with it.
