Game 2 of this non-exciting series will go off Tuesday Night.  The prediction for Game 1 is already out and will play Monday night. Aaron Judge is still stuck at 61 home runs on the season and the total he finishes with will be all the drama left in the Yankees season.  The Yankees have clinched a playoff berth… while the Rangers have clinched not getting into any postseason play.  The result will be a Rangers team going through the motions… Sometimes going through the motions for a bad team… means guys on the roster “auditioning for their next job”.  That means we have to look at the pitching matchup and the numbers and make a real prediction.  Both teams may be toying with bullpen guys as both teams are certain of their immediate future.  One thing we know is that lots of cell-phone pictures will be taken at every Aaron Judge at bat.

The Yankees got off to the hottest start in baseball this season, but stumbled a bit over the summer and got lapped by the Dodgers in the National League and the Astros in the American League for best record by season’s end.  They do catch a good break to finish the season which comes in the form of a 4-games series against the lousy Texas Rangers.  Should be a relatively easy way to prepare for the postseason.  The Yankees also experienced some historic fun this year as home run hitter Aaron Judge caught Babe Ruth at 60 home runs… then caught Roger Maris at 61 home runs… and have left Yankee fans with 5 games (including Sunday against the Orioles).. To find out how many he will actually finish with.  Judge’s numbers have also reopened the debate over whether we should count anything done by Barry Bonds, Big Mac, and Sammy Sosa…. Who actually has the home run record?... Lot of people are saying it is up to you as a fan to decide if the clean (because everyone including him gets tested now) Aaron Judge has the home run record?... Or if the steroid ripped Barry Bonds has the record?  It is not likely Judge rips 11 home runs in the last 5 games to take away any doubt.

The New York Yankees have won 8 of their last 10 games.  They went 1-1 against the Baltimore Orioles (with 1 left to play), 2-1 against the Toronto Blue Jays, a very satisfying 4-0 against the Boston Red Sox, and 1-0 against the Pittsburgh Pirates during that stretch.  The Yankees are in a great position to make solid noise in the postseason… They have great batting and great pitching… very few weak spots to speak of.

The Texas Rangers are trapped in a seemingly endless repetition of bad seasons.  They have lost two games straight to the Los Angeles Angels for God’s sake!  This is not a good team.  They have won only 3 of their last 10 games.  They are on a 4 game losing streak.  They have faced a long summer of hot Dallas weather to simply shuffle off into obscurity. A few days from now.  Sad really.  They have gone 0-2 against the Angels, 1-2 against the lowly Seattle Mariners, 0-3 against the Cleveland Guardians, and 2-0 against the Los Angeles Angels.  The Rangers roster is choppy… Some good scoring despite a below average BA and OBP… That weak offense is backed by simply bad pitching.

Key Injuries

Yankees: 2B D LeMahieu (toe) Quest ** LF A Benintendi (wrist) Out **

Players to Watch

Yankees:  RHP Gerrit Cole, 13-7, 3.51 ERA, 248 strikeouts in 194 innings pitched.  1.02 WHIP.  Mr Cole can throw that speedball by you… make you look like a fool boy…. His strikeouts are piling up. At 32 years old this UCLA grad still has a long MLB future.

Rangers: RHP John Gray, 7-7, 3.93 ERA, 131 strikeouts in 122 innings pitched.  1.15 WHIP.  the “Wolf” is a good pitcher… he doesn’t quite get the run support he needs.  His average win/loss record is a shame.  He also may give up a homer to Judge.
