Yankees vs Red Sox Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Yankees dominated the Red Sox on Friday, coming away winners with the final score 8-3.  That was an Over with the number target set at 9.5.  The win also propelled them to 2 games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays and 1 game behind the Red Sox for the top Wild Card Spot. With 8 games to go, each game grows in importance.  Inning by inning the drama is increasing.  Get your Maalox in whatever form you take it and watch these games!!

The Yankees have moved to 7-3 over their last ten games.  Notching 4 Overs and 6 Unders They went 2-1 against the Baltimore Orioles, 1-2 against the Cleveland Indians, Swept the Texas Rangers 3-0, and opened this three-game series against the Red Sox 1-0.  To get where they want to go in this wild card race, it is imperative they beat the Red Sox in head to head play.

The Red Sox are 7-3 over their last ten games.  Logging 7 Overs, 2 Unders and 1 Push.  The Yankees stopped the Sox win streak at 7.  During the ten game stretch they went 0-1 against the Chicago White Sox, 2-1 against the Seattle Mariners, Swept the Baltimore Orioles 3-0, Swept the New York Mets 2-0, and lost to the Yankees 0-1.

Offensive Analysis

The Bronx Bombers are 20th in team batting average .239, 18th in runs scored 676, 6th in home runs, 211.  The Yankees really benefit in leading the league in BB.  They get more guys on base through walks than anyone else.  That is a powerful solvent for a low team batting average.

The Red Sox are 3rd in team batting average .262, 3rd in runs scored 797, 10th in home runs, 211.  In contrast the Sox are 18th in BB, so while they get more from their hitters they don’t get nearly as many free base runners.

Defensive Analysis

Yankees pitchers are 4th in team ERA 3.73, 4th in strikeouts 1492, and 5th in WHIP.  It’s not just the exciting Geritt Cole… He gets help all over the rotation from Nestor Cortes, Aroldis Chapman, etc.

The Red Sox are 15th in team ERA, 7th in strikeouts 1440, 24th in WHIP 1.38.  The team whip and the whip of Sunday’s starter Eduardo Rodriguez are identical, below league average.

Players to Watch

The Yankees will start left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery on the mound 6-6, 3.55 ERA, 155 Strikeouts in 149 innings pitched.  The 28 year old, nicknamed “Monty”, is landing an important assignment here.  Sunday’s game three is the final chance to get a full game jump on the Red Sox as we spill into the final week of the season.  Hopefully the South Carolina Kid can handle it.

The Red Sox will start lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, 11-8, 4.97 ERA, 170 SO in 146 IP.  The 28 year old Venezuelan has seen his ERA move in the wrong direction this season, but is still throwing a good fastball.  His strikeout to inning ratio is nice too.  Can he stop a slide to third place if that is on the line?
