Rangers - Red Wings preview, prediction and analysis

The New York Rangers will be playing the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, February 23 in Detroit, Michigan.

The New York Rangers lost against the Winnipeg Jets last Monday, February 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York with a score of 4-1. The New York Rangers currently rank 3rd in the Metropolitan Division.

Vincent Trocheck scored for the Rangers (33-15-9), who were 8-0-2 during their point streak. Igor Shesterkin made 17 saves.

"[Hellebuyck] was great, not a lot of rebounds," Rangers captain Jacob Trouba said. "He was where he needed to be. Simple. He doesn't get out of position or make the acrobatic, crazy save because he doesn't put himself in that position. He was good, controlled the rebounds and there wasn't a lot of second chances for us."

Winnipeg scored three goals before New York scored.

"You're not going to keep them to nothing," Trouba said. "They've got some good players on their team, they capitalized on their chances, and we just didn't put ours in. Just one of those games."

Trocheck cut it to 3-1 at 11:00, finishing a backdoor pass from Vladimir Tarasenko at the left post.

"I thought we did a decent job of getting inside," Rangers forward Chris Kreider said. "They did a good job keeping us to the outside, but it wasn't like that the entire night. We were getting some really good Grade A chances in tight. We got our looks ... we got our chances, and the puck wouldn't go in."

Mark Scheifele scored on a backhand in the slot at 15:29 of the third period for the 4-1 final.

The New York Rangers have won seven of their last 10 games.

The Detroit Red Wings won against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, February 21 at Capital One Arena in Washington with a score of 3-1. The Detroit Red Wings currently rank 5th in the Atlantic Division.

Pius Suter scored two goals for the Detroit Red Wings. Robert Hagg scored his first goal of the season for the Red Wings (27-21-8), who are 6-1-0 in their past seven games. Ville Husso made 26 saves, including 15 in the third period.

"We just go day by day right now," Husso said. "We know we can win in this league, and we have the team that can win. It's just day by day, have fun and move on."

Hagg gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 10:16 of the first period, taking a pass from Tyler Bertuzzi and scoring five-hole from above the face-off circles. Suter made it 2-0 at 14:22, electing to shoot glove side from the left circle on a 2-on-1 while short-handed.

The goal came after Dylan Larkin was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking T.J. Oshie in the face at 12:43.

"Obviously, not ideal losing [Larkin] early on (and) killing seven minutes of the first 22, 23 minutes, but I thought our guys managed it extremely well," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "We needed a complete effort from everyone. We needed everyone to step up even more, and they did that and got ourselves a good road win."

Tom Wilson cut it to 2-1 at 15:57 when he redirected Erik Gustafsson's slap shot in the slot. Suter pushed it to 3-1 at 6:24 of the third period, scoring blocker side from the slot after Evgeny Kuznetsov whiffed on a clearing attempt.

Suter has scored in three straight and has five goals in his past five games.

"Puck was bouncing around a little bit, and I think a great screen by [Oskar Sundqvist], and I just had to pick a corner," Suter said.

The Detroit Red Wings have won seven of their last 10 games.
