Recent Form:

The Mets are 3-7 over their last ten games.  Notching 5 Unders and 5 Overs.  They got swept by the Philadelphia Phillies 0-3, they swept the Washington Nationals 3-0, they got swept by the Dodgers 0-3, they lost the first to the Giants

Statistical Comparison:

The Mets are 24th in team batting average .235, 28th in runs scored 448, 26th in home runs 124.  They have almost no offense to speak of.  Few games are won with this poor run support.  Few games are won by losing teams after the trade deadline in any season.  Few games are won by the Mets… both this year and historically.  Does Bill Maher still own a piece of this team… shouldn’t he make some New Rules?  Mon-Fri this a bad team… on weekends they stink!  Bet against them even with the poor moneyline return.  (unless of course they are playing the Nationals.

The Mets pitching is 10th in ERA, 19th in strikeouts, 20th in stopping home runs.  The ERA number shows that this is a team that needs run support next year if they want to climb out of the cellar.  They should want to.

The Giants are first in home runs 179, 9th in batting average .248, and 8th in runs scored 589.  They hit the ball.  They are beaten by the Dodgers and Astros in most batting categories but do lead the league in homeruns.  This team sometimes feels like the Brandon Crawford show at the plate but I promise the other guys are hitting great too.

Mets vs Giants Game Preview:

The Mets will start Tylor Megill 1-2, 3.42 ERA, 54 Strikeouts in 50 innings pitched, 1.16 WHIP.  This 26 year old was an 8th round pick in 2018.  His ears are still drying in the bigs.  His stats are meaningless because of the sample size.  The young right-hander is being asked to face a powerful San Francisco lineup. It might seem like the Mets are torturing this kid, his previous start was against the Los Angeles Dodgers.  5 innings, 6 Dodger hits, giving up 3 earned runs in a team loss.  Still he looks good.  He had 5 K’s and hit a double in a few innings against the Phillies, He did strike out 6 of those same Dodgers that beat him.  He looks like a keeper.  Even if the Giants offense causes some regression.

The Giants are putting Anthony DeScalafani on the mound.  If anything on him is green he should see a doctor.  The 31 year old is a legitimate Ace.  11-5, 3.29 ERA, 122 strikeouts in 131 innings pitched, 1.08 WHIP.  His last win came against the Colorado Rockies on 08/13 before that he was the starting pitcher against the Arizona Diamondbacks 8/02.. If it looks like he gets 10 day breaks between starts he doesn’t. He’s one of the trusted starters in San Fran but sat a few on a 10day IL.

The Giants are first place in the National League West.  They are a wrecking ball through Major League Baseball… winning baseball game after baseball game. The fans are excited for the franchise, they rarely struggle with an opponent, and the Mets will have almost no defense for what will hit them.  Yet even with the best record they are fervently praying that The San Diego Padres find enough magic to keep the Giants from having to go through Dodger stadium to make the World Series.  They won’t, they will have to.

Notable quotes:

“We didn’t execute some pitches. We had some missed opportunities with runners in scoring position. And that’s about it,” -Mets manager Luis Rojas about the first loss to the Giants in this series.

“He’s a former MVP winner, so he’s obviously a big piece of our team now,....I think he showed that tonight by being able to hit a couple homers and play left field, play right field. With his versatility, his athleticism and his hitting ability, he’s a big piece for our team.” - Giants star Brandon Crawford said of his recently added teammate Kris Bryant and Kris’s two home run night against the Mets.  Brandon mustered all his strength to swallow the bitter tasting jealousy.  The sportswriter then saw Kris enter the clubhouse and left Brandon mid-sentence.
