Mets: 36-19, 1st place National League East
Padres: 32-21, 2nd place National League West

As this article is being written the New York Mets have shelled the San Diego Padres for 3 runs in the first inning of Game 1 of this series.  The outcome is not yet decided… but wow.  The Padres’ Blake Snell collapsed quick.  The prediction in this article covers Game 2 of the series in San Diego’s Petco Park.  The betting lines at the moment show a pretty good return on your money if you bet the red hot Mets now before any movement takes place before tomorrow night’s opening pitch.

A National League matchup between the Best in the East division and the 2nd best in the West division.  Both teams in this matchup are good and looking to keep it up… However the Mets are not just leading the national League East, but the entire National League.  In all of baseball only the American League Yankees are better at this moment.  In the NL East the Mets have an  8.5 game lead over last year’s World Series Champs the Atlanta Braves.  The Padres on the other hand… are doing very well for the Padres.  The Padres are 3 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, but still are among just 5 National League teams to have over 30 wins.  The mission for the Padres is to keep ahead of the Giants and within striking range of the Dodgers.

The New York Mets have won 7 of their last ten games… They got a little smacked around by the Dodgers but a lot of teams do.  They are 7 Over and 3 Under during that stretch. They went 1-2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-0 against the Washington Nationals, 3-0 against the Philadelphia Phillies, and 1-0 against the San Francisco Giants.  The batting has been going gangbusters… That is why the Over has landed so many times for this club over the last ten games.  The pitching has been coming through as well. Starter Carlos Carrasco leads the team in wins from the mound with 6… while first baseman Pete Alonso has been swatting pitches over the wall to the tally of 16 so far.  Everything is going gangbusters so far.

The San Diego Padres have won just 5 of their last 10 games.  With 3 Overs, 5 Unders, and 2 Push.  The Padres started the season strong and have swooned a little over the last two weeks.  It is unfortunate that the Mets are the team they will have to face at exactly this important moment.  The Padres pitchers are carrying their weight for sure… to stay on pace though they will need some better batting.  Manny Machado leads the team in home runs, batting average, and OPS while Fernando Tatis Jr has been out with a wrist injury and will be out until mid-June.  The Padres are on a 3-game winning streak going 3-1 against the Milwaukee Brewers, 0-3 against the St Louis Cardinals, and 2-1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

New York Mets vs San Diego Padres Prediction

Our prediction for Tuesday June 7th is… Mets 6 - Padres 2

The Mets are near enough to the best team in baseball to be the 2nd best team in baseball right now.  If the Padres couldn’t prove it over the last ten games they won’t be able to prove it here.  Bet the Mets on the Moneyline.

Players to Watch

Mets: RHP Taijuan Walker, 3-1, 2.88 ERA, 21 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched, 1.28 WHIP.  The 29 year old is looking to build on his 3-1 start to the season.  He was the 43rd pick of the 2010 draft by the Seattle Mariners and has bounced around a bit.  His debut was in 2013 when he was just a teen and in the intervening decade has gone 45-46 in the W/L column.

Padres: RHP Yu Darvish, 4-3, 4.03 ERA, 48 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched.  1.09 WHIP.  Yu is a firm starter in San Diego.  His career 83-70 record and his current nice WHIP will keep him on the mound barring injury.    He is a plug and play guy who really just needs run support.

Starting Lineups

Mets: CF Brandon Nimmo, RF Starling Marte, SS Francisco Lindor, 1B Pete Alonso, LF Jeff McNeil, 2B Luis Guillorme, 3B Eduardo Escorbar, DH Nick Plummer, C Patrick Mazeika

Padres: 2B -1B Jake Cronenworth, 3B Manny Machado, DH Jurickson Profar, RF Will Myers, 1B Luke Voit, C Austin Nola, SS Ha-Seong Kim, CF Trent Grisham, LF Jose Azocar
