Mets - Rockies preview and analysis

Mets analysis

So, good news. The New York Mets won again. They are 25-14 after winning 11-4 on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. It doesn't seem like they're slowing down any time soon and they might just be the best team in the NL East for a long time.

The bad news? Max Scherzer is scheduled for an MRI after he left that start with tightness on his left side and he will be evaluated. Which sucks because Scherzer has been everything and more in his first year with the Mets, going 5-1 and looking as dominant as ever.

“I don’t think this is a major strain,” Scherzer said. “I was kind of tight, and then all of a sudden it went. But I don’t feel like I really ripped it. I felt like it just kind of got worse. So hopefully I got out of there quick enough to prevent a major, major injury here. I know obliques, intercostals, those things can be nasty. Hopefully, I avoided a serious injury.”

“He’s been a great self-evaluator,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. “He knows when he’s at a point when if he pushes more, it’s going to turn into something serious.”

The Mets are already without Jacob deGrom, so anything long-term without Scherzer would be the absolute worst thing that could happen. If that turns into something, we may need to start praying to the pitching gods.

But it was the bats that came alive in Scherzer's early exit. The 1-5 batters each had a hit, and the Mets erupted for five runs in the eighth to pull the game away. Three of those runs came on a three-run bomb from Pete Alonso.

Rockies analysis

It's been a ... rocky month of May for the Colorado Rockies, but to finally get a victory over the San Francisco Giants in their last 13 meetings might do some good. The problem is trying to build off it, but when have we ever known that to be the case with this Colorado team?

The Rockies scored three runs in the eighth, highlighted by C.J. Cron's go-ahead two-run homer and the Rockies finally got a win over the Giants 5-3 on Wednesday. Cron, who leads the Rockies with 10 homers and 30 RBI, hit his first dinger since May 3.

"It was huge," said Cron. "We haven't been playing the best baseball recently, especially at home. So to be able to get that one today, especially against those guys — we haven't had much success against them either — it was a big game for us."

That 454-foot blast may be what gets the Rockies going. Even though there's still plenty of baseball left, and Bryant will return to the lineup eventually because that's what you do when paying almost $200 million, you're bound to get some sort of production.

Prediction

The way the Mets' bats have been hitting, it seems like a good time to be in Coors Field. I'm thinking the Mets will attack Colorado early and start this series with a win. Mets win 8-4
