Jets - Patriots preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Jets: Bye (won 20-17 vs. Bills in Week 9)
Patriots: Bye (won 26-3 vs. Colts in Week 9)

This is it. This is the game that ultimately determines the New York Jets’ future of this season. They couldn’t get it done the first time and lost by 5. Now, with a chance for redemption against the New England Patriots – this time in Foxboro – the Jets have a chance for their signature win.

Forget the Bills, forget the Dolphins without Tua Tagovailoa. It’s about facing the Patriots and finding a way to beat Bill Belichick because the Jets have lost the last 13 meetings against the Patriots, including the 22-17 game on Oct. 30 in MetLife Stadium.

But the Jets are coming off a bye week after defeating the Bills 20-17 in what was the most significant win of this run for Robert Saleh’s group. Sure, the offense hasn’t been great and the quarterback play remains skeptical. But with a win here against the Patriots, the Jets are closing in on a playoff spot and would be 7-3. But the fact that win against Buffalo came one week after the Patriots won is just the cherry on top for everything.

"I know a lot of people are going to be surprised, right?" Saleh said. "I don't think there's a person surprised in the locker room."

I think we’ll forever be surprised. Because if the Jets had solid quarterback play, they’d be unbeatable right now. Zach Wilson is trying his hardest in his second year, but finished just 18 of 25 for 154 yards and a touchdown. The important thing, though, is he didn’t turn the ball over unlike Josh Allen (two interceptions).

Even with Breece Hall out for the year, the Jets have continued to get contributions in running the ball. Michael Carter ran for 76 yards and a touchdown; the newly-acquired James Robinson ran for 48 yards on 13 carries with his new team; and Wilson even ran for 24 yards on 5 carries.

There’s a perfect balance right now and the Jets are showing they need another receiver opposite of Garrett Wilson.

The Patriots, meanwhile, keep on finding ways to win and are at a solid 5-4 after back-to-back wins against the Jets and the Indianapolis Colts, the latter being a 26-3 result at home that ultimately led to Jeff Saturday becoming the Colts’ new coach the next day.

The New England defense got nine sacks and needed just 203 total yards to dominate the Colts. Mac Jones threw for 147 yards on 20 of 30 passing and 1 touchdown, but the stars were Matt Judon and Josh Uche with 3 sacks each.

"My teammates put me in great situations to execute," Judon said. "I'm just willing to do whatever I need to do for our defense to have success. Whatever that is, however it looks, and however I need to play I'm willing to do it. Today it was just one of those games."

Not sure if that defense will get the chance to do that against the Jets, but if anything, they’re ready to talk about it if the opportunity presents itself.

Prediction

The Patriots are only laying 3 points in this one, and that is enticing for either side. Expecting Saleh to have his group ready for the Patriots when they couldn’t beat them the first time is a good idea, but the running game is going to have to do its thing and keep the defense on the field for exhaustion purposes. I want to see what the Jets do. Patriots by 3
