Opening MLB Odds at USA Sportsbooks

DraftKings Sportsbook:  Spread: Wyoming -19.5; Over/Under:  40.5 points
Circa:  Spread: Wyoming -20; Over/Under:  40 points
VegasInsider:  Spread:  Wyoming -20; Over/Under: 40.5 points

Season Record

New Mexico: 2-5, 0-3 MWC
Wyoming: 4-2, 0-2 MWC

The Mountain West conference will get a winner among these two winless in-conference teams.  New Mexico is the big underdog.  The moneyline odds are Wyoming -1111, New Mexico +1040… I wish I could recommend betting on the underdog SU, but with 20-point underdogs you have to look at the numbers and just see if they will cover.

New Mexico vs Wyoming Preview and Analysis

RECENT FORM
New Mexico opened the season with their two wins.  What a feeling it must have been to be undefeated!  They beat the Houston Baptist Huskies 27-17 and the New Mexico State Aggies 34-25.  Then the real teams on the schedule started rolling in.  They lost to the Texas A&M Aggies 34-0, then the Utep Miners 20-13, then the Air Force Falcons* 38-10, then the San Diego State Aztecs 31-7, then the Colorado State Rams 36-7…. When the dust cleared they had lost 5 games in a row!  {A quick note to the AD of New Mexico… schedule more games against Houston Baptist}

The Wyoming Cowboys opened their season in the opposite manner.  They had 4 straight wins before the losing started.  They beat the Montana State Bobcats 19-16, the Northern Illinois Huskies 50-43, then the Ball State Cardinals 45-12, then the Connecticut Huskies* 24-22.  Then the losing started. Twice the Cowboys lost, Air Force Falcons 24-14, and the Fresno State Bulldogs 17-0.

We can make some easy observations right off the bat.  These two teams both played the Air Force Falcons and lost.  New Mexico lost by 28 points, Wyoming lost by 10 points, an 18 point difference.  Also I highlighted the Connecticut Huskies on Wyoming’s list.  To bet on Wyoming we have to believe that they will cover 20 points… but they gave up 22 points to Connecticut (and only won by 2 points) who are on a multi-year winless streak.

Offensive Analysis

New Mexico is ranked 130th out of 130 in the FBS on offense.  They have scored 9 touchdowns in 7 games while averaging only 253.6 yards per game.  They are bad on offense…. In fact according to the FBS rankings they are the worst on offense.

Wyoming is ranked 112th on offense in the FBS.  They have scored 17 touchdowns (almost double in 1 less game) on 333 yards per game.  They are not top 100 good on offense but they are better than New Mexico.  In all of Wyoming’s games they have only beat 1 team by more than 1 score and that was Ball State by 33 points.

Defensive Analysis

New Mexico stats improve when we get on defense.  New Mexico is ranked 56th in the FBS on defense.  They have given up 21 touchdowns and an average of 362.1 yards per game.  Those aren't the greatest numbers when you consider that they are considerably larger than the offense gets…. But 56th on defense is good for a team that spends all day punting and turning the ball over.

Wyoming also improves considerably on the defensive side of the ball.  The Cowboys are ranked 29th in the FBS on defense.  They have given up 17 touchdowns and 319.8 points a game.  They are playing at home, possibly in the snow… the defense will have all the advantage.

Wyoming: Craig Bohl. He got the job in 2014 after having been the North Dakota State head coach for a decade.  His Wyoming record is 42-46.  The 63 year old makes 1.5 million a year.  Not bad work if you can get it.
