Devils - Stars preview, prediction and analysis

The New Jersey Devils will be playing the Dallas Stars on Friday, January 27 in Dallas, Texas.

The New Jersey Devils won against the Vegas Golden Knights last Tuesday, January 24 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The New Jersey Devils currently rank 2nd in the Metropolitan Division.

Dougie Hamilton scored in overtime for the second straight game. Hamilton won it at 3:54 with a one-timer from between the face-off circles off a pass from Jack Hughes in a battle at the right wall after he tied the game 2-2 from above the right circle with 1:10 remaining in the third period.

He also scored in overtime to give New Jersey a 2-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

"Great play by Jack, and he just laid it on a platter for me," Hamilton said.

Ondrej Palat scored, and Hughes and Jesper Bratt each had two assists for the Devils (31-12-4), who are 7-0-1 in their past eight games. Vitek Vanecek made 28 saves and is 8-0-0 in his past eight starts.

"We're competing," Vanecek said. "We're scoring goals, playing good [defense], defense is blocking the shots. Trying to do everything for the win."

Palat gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead at 3:58 of the first period when he took a shot from the edge of the right circle that deflected off the stick of Vegas defenseman Kaedan Korczak and over Thompson's glove.

It was Palat's first goal since returning from a groin injury on Jan. 5 after missing 32 games.

"It feels pretty good," Palat said. "I had a couple of chances in those previous games, but it just feels good to contribute and score."

The Devils outshot the Golden Knights 4-0 in overtime.

New Jersey will be playing the second game of a back-to-back after losing 6-4 to the Nashville Predators on Thursday. Hamilton had three assists, and Hughes had a goal and an assist. Mackenzie Blackwood made 35 saves to fall to 7-3 in their last 10.

The Dallas Stars lost against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, January 25 at American Airlines center in Dallas, Stars with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The Dallas Stars currently rank 1st in the Central Division.

Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson scored for the Stars (28-13-9), who have lost two in a row but extended their point streak to four games (2-0-2). Jake Oettinger made 21 saves.

"It was pretty tight checking, not a lot of room either way," Dallas coach Peter DeBoer said. "It's always a surprise, as much as you talk about it when you play them, because they're as good as there is in the League at putting that offensive zone pressure on you. But I thought we adjusted to it better as the game went on.

"I think the overtime thing is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy right now. We just don't have a lot of confidence for whatever reason in overtime, so we've got to find that swagger again."

Johnston tied it 1-1 at 10:59. Hurricanes defenseman Dylan Coghlan failed to clear the puck on his backhand, allowing Johnston to chip it past Andersen.

Robertson put the Stars ahead 2-1 at 15:17 when his shot from behind the goal line deflected into the net off Andersen.

Brent Burns tied it 2-2 at 4:55 of the second period with a slap shot off the crossbar from the top of the left face-off circle.

"They do a good job," Dallas forward Luke Glendening said. "They're a heavy, hard team. I think we are as well. Unfortunately, we didn't get the two points. Obviously we're always looking for two points, but if you can get one, you'll take it."

The Dallas Stars have won five of their last 10 games.

Prediction

The Devils held Vanecek for this game, but it is their third in four days with travel involved. They're going to need a big goaltending effort, but that will also happen with Oettinger. Stars 3, Devils 2
