If this were a 16-game season, we’d be rejoicing that we’re at the halfway mark, which I guess we still are at this point? Not quite sure, but alas, here we are at the halfway mark and things are topsy turvy. The Buccaneers are below .500. The Packers are below .500. The NFC East has a three-team race that includes the Giants not knowing how to lose. What in the world is going to happen this week? One thing we can assure you is if Al McMordie continues on his 8-4-0 run over the last week, you’re also looking up at the halfway mark if you believe in our champion handicappers. Patriots - Jets preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Patriots: lost 33-14 vs. Bears
Jets: won 16-9 at Broncos

The New England Patriots are coming into this halfway mark game at 3-4 and suddenly falling down the rabbit hole of the AFC East. They failed to find a way to win their third straight game on Monday after a 33-14 loss to the Chicago Bears. Due to the Buffalo Bills becoming the powerhouse they are, and the sudden surge from their opponent this week, the Patriots are finding their way to a big problem at quarterback and are running out of time to figure that out. Bailey Zappe replaced Mac Jones in the second quarter and went on to throw for 185 yards and a touchdown, but two interceptions after that. Jones will get the start on Sunday in another instance that maybe this is going to be the more difficult road traveled for Bill Belichick that’s ever happened before. The Patriots had just 19 runs for 70 yards, with Rhamonder Stevenson running for 39 of those yards and a touchdown. Devante Parker caught three passes for 68 yards, while Stevenson caught eight passes for 59 yards. If your running back is leading the team in receptions, something’s not going right. The lack of offense didn’t allow the Patriots to do enough to put the Chicago offense at bay. There’s only so much Matt Judon can do with his 2.5 sacks, ultimately.

“Just a poor showing, across the board, from beginning all the way to the end,” New England safety Devin McCourty said. “If we give up 33 points, I don’t care who plays quarterback. We’re going to have a tough time winning the game.”

The New York Jets are on the most bizarre four-game winning streak you’ve ever seen. The Jets come into this week at 5-2 and are somehow hanging with the Buffalo Bills in the division to this point. New York is coming off a 16-9 win over the Denver Broncos on the road, and this will be just the second home game in five weeks for the Jets. But things may be getting a little more troubling over the rest of the way. Rookie running back Breece Hall tore his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season. The Jets went out to acquire Jaguars running back James Robinson to fill the whole in hopes of getting him going after Jacksonville resorted to Travis Etienne. Zach Wilson finished with 121 yards on 16 of 26 passing, and the Jets defense got three sacks on Broncos backup quarterback Brett Rypien.

"First off, this defense is ridiculous," Jets coach Robert Saleh said. "They've got a really good defense. Credit to them. Obviously, Zach wants some things that he could have back, but he did a great job. He didn't turn the ball over. He got the ball to where he needed to and we were still able to generate a couple of scoring drives in the second half."

Prediction

Are we really prepared to say that the Jets are ready to take over the Patriots because of one four-game winning streak? If it weren’t for the fact that the Jets have beat some decent teams along the way, including holding Aaron Rodgers to a pedestrian night, maybe things are, in fact, turning up right for the Jets. New York is getting points because the books still don’t believe in the Jets, and I can’t really blame them, but you know which team is building momentum and who is floundering. I’m taking New York.
