Miami (OH) - Army preview and analysis

Recent form
Miami (OH): won 42-7 vs. FCS Long Island on Sept. 18
Army: won 52-21 vs. Connecticut on Sept. 18

The last time the Army Black Knights started a season 4-0, Bill Clinton was president, gas surely wasn’t $4 a gallon and the rent was not too damn high.

October 1996 was the last time Army started that well. The Knights actually started that season 9-0 and were ranked No. 22 in the country before losing to No. 19 Syracuse, at the Carrier Dome, for their first loss of the season.

Then the Knights lost to Auburn in the Independence Bowl, so it wasn’t all fairytale endings.

But Army can rekindle that magic on Saturday when it faces the Miami-Ohio Redhawks at West Point for its third consecutive home game.

It’s been a cakewalk to this point for Army with wins over Georgia State and UConn. The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers victory, 38-35, was the only close one out of that bunch.

Army has long been a proponent of the triple-option, and quarterback Christian Anderson has ran it very well to this point. He has 382 total yards and six touchdowns in the first three games while being the Knights’ leading rusher. But perhaps even more impressive is the fact Anderson has thrown 10 total passes, completed eight of them, for 187 yards to lead the Army offense.

And he hasn’t thrown an interception yet, which is also good for a quarterback who doesn’t throw often.

The Redhawks are coming off a 42-7 win over FCS Long Island on Saturday for their first win of the season. But seeing how Miami fared against the Minnesota Golden Gophers two weeks ago, losing only by five points, it’s a good two-week stretch for the Ohio club.

Quarterback Brett Gabbert needed only 16 pass attempts before finishing the day, completing 10 for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Sorenson had a team-high 86 yards and one touchdown for the Redhawks, holding off what was a quiet day for Mac Hippenhammer (1 catch, 9 yards).

Miami’s run defense will be heavily tested against Army’s ground game. When the Redhawks faced the Gophers two weeks ago, Treyson Potts ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns while carrying the ball 34 times.

Sometimes you can only play for the run as many times as you can before getting burned. Miami has been a part of college football long enough to know what to expect.

Prediction

There’s excitement at West Point and there’s still some weeks left before things get interesting for Army. The Knights offense looks really good right now and it’s going to be a tough test for Miami to overcome. We like Army to barely cover, as well. Army by 13
