A Western Conference “what the hell happened?” matchup.  The Spurs and the Lakers have been notorious rivals from the 1997 to at least 2017… For a solid decade wedged in between there either the Lakers or the Spurs were winning titles.  5 rings for LA, 5 rings for San Antonio.  Back and forth… killing each other in the Western Conference Finals… always contenders.  Heck the Lakers even lost a finals in there…. However the San Antonio Spurs fell off an NBA cliff when they traded SG Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in 2017-2018.  The San Antonio Spurs have been awful since… even as they have had a few great players hustle through there… like PG/SG Dejounte Murray and SG Derrick White.  They could never rise above average and as a result fully committed to “tanking” to rebuild.  This is the year they have a shot at Victor Wembanyama… because they literally have nothing left on their roster that could reliably be expected to win an NBA game let alone a lot of them. The Spurs in 14th place in the Conference.  The Lakers did it differently… They “went all in” since Kobe Bryant left and Dr Jerry Buss passed away.  The Lakers signed the NBA’s all time best player LeBron James and then traded every asset that wasn’t nailed down to get PF Anthony Davis and actually won a quick title!!  Nice!  Then they found a few more assets hidden in plain site and traded those away for SG Russell Westbrook… NOT so nice.  The Lakers currently have LeBron James playing amazingly as he approaches the league’s all time scoring record…. And not much else of anything else since AD is injured and Russell Westbrook doesn’t fit with LeBron… everyone else on the entire team could be cut from the league and noone would notice they are gone.  The Lakers are in 13th place… yesterday was the big chance for them as they were in 12th place and only 2 games out of 6th place in the West because of a bottleneck of records… all they had to do was beat their City and stadium rivals the Los Angeles Clippers… They lost.  Now they are 3 games out of 7th place… not so close.  The great betting opportunity here will be found entirely in the points spread… the Spurs do not even want to win… but strange things happen and they could keep it close against a very bad team.

The San Antonio Spurs have only won 2 of their last 10 games and nobody expects them to ever do much better until next season.  They lost their last game against the Portland Trail Blazers (no favor to the Lakers) 147-127… a very big loss ATS.  The tricky secret to keeping some money on the Spurs is that they are 7-3 ATS over the last 10 games!  They cover spreads!  The spreads are almost always large… The Spurs are still a professional basketball team.  In the last loss they got 20 points from forward Keldon Johnson and 18 points from forward Jeremy Sochan… They had six other p[layers score in double figures… but Portland was cutting them up all night… as PG Damian Lilliard hit 37 points, and SG Anfernee Simons hit 26 points for the Blazers.

The Los Angeles Lakers have won 5 of their last 10 games.  They lost the last one to the Los Angeles Clippers 133-115.  38 year old LeBron James had 46 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. He was great and he became the only player in history to have a 40+ point game in his career against every NBA team in existence… Pretty great.  Still, the Clippers blew the Lakers out early and kept on the gas long enough to still blow out the Lakers by the final whistle.  The Lakers should become a different team soon as they expect PF/SF Rui Hachimura to join the team for active games and AD is supposed to come off the injury list with only a short amount of games on minutes restriction. We will see.  The one thing we do know… They owe their pick to the New Orleans Pelicans this year… so they have no reason to tank… This is all just bad basketball despite everyone’s best efforts.

San Antonio Spurs VS Los Angeles Lakers Prediction

Our prediction for Wednesday, January 25th is…. Lakers 114 - Spurs 111

Bet on the Spurs.  The Spurs will and can cover the spread, especially a +7 spread.  They also could mess around and win outright.  The reason is that the Lakers will not yet have AD… might still not have Rui Hachimura?... AND Russell Westbrook is again feeling the sting of the home crowd openly despising him even though he has been one of the best 6th men in the league. The Lakers could come into this matchup with a ton of hurt feelings and the Laker guards will be the undersized pair on the court.

NBA Betting Trends

The Lakers are 1-10 ATS versus Pacific Division Opponents this season.
The Spurs are 1-7 ATS after allowing 130 points or more this season.

Players To Watch

Spurs: C Jakob Poeltl.  Jakob is an average NBA Center.  Still lots of teams will be checking on him at the trade deadline.  The Spurs have so little talent on the floor that Jakob seems like a better Center than he is. Plus if the Spurs are still selling (and they are)? Jakob could be gotten for not too much.

Lakers:  C Thomas Bryant.  Thomas is an enigma… big games here and there and lots of stinkers. He had 8 points and 7 rebounds against the Grizzlies and then 31 points 14 rebounds against the Trail Blazers.  Up and Down… Up and Down.

Spurs: Greg “the legend” Popovich
Lakers: Darvin “the Rookie” Ham
