An NBA inter-conference matchup between a “middle of the pack” West team… and possibly the worst team in basketball.  The Suns finished last year with a disappointment.  They felt like they had the roster to win it all.. And fell short.  They had a couple of calamities in the off-season like a contentious contract extension with C Deandre Ayton and an owner who was revealed to be a scumbag and promised to sell the team before he was forced to.  Then the season began and they were on there way to greatness… until SG Devin Booker got injured.. And PG Chris Paul got injured.. And PF Cameron Johsnon got injured… and PF Jae Crowder (last season’s starter) has not been with the team all season as the team would prefer to trade him instead of negotiating an extension of any kind (a mistake)... Suddenly Phoenix’s amazing starting five with TONS of depth started to look like a tire fire of mismatched unheralded parts and they lost a BUNCH of games. However several of the injured Suns have returned to the active roster and the ship may have begun to right itself… after plummeting from top-2 in the West to 11th in the West… The Suns now find themselves at 6th.  They do not have SG Devin Booker back?... So that does leave them without the biggest star on the roster, but they are more solid then they were just a few weeks ago.  The Detroit Pistons don’t have an actual “real” team.  They have a team with only 1 star PG Cade Cunningham… who is out with injury… has been for awhile.. And will not be hurried back.  Instead the Pistons have a bunch of young guys and mismatched forwards.  They have been designed to lose and lose big this year.  The only thing they want to do this season is win the NBA’s Draft Lottery.  Come hell or high water… getting the #1 pick is the only goal.  They need 7’4 French teenager Victor Wembanaya more than any other team in the association.  The ultimate failure would be to land the #2 pick… where the presumptive pick will be a Point Guard by the name of Scoot… and they already have a point guard.  The great betting opportunity here will be the point spread and spread alone… the Suns will win, but by how much are you willing to risk some cash?

The Phoenix Suns have won 7 of theri last 10 games as they have gotten as healthy as they are going to get for a while. They spectacularly won their last game over the league’s best team the Boston Celtics 106-94… since the Suns were 10 point underdogs it was a HUGE win ATS. In the win SF Mikal Bridges who has been playing out of position as a guard dropped 25 points, C Deandre Ayton had 14,10,5… PF Dario Saric had 14, 13, 3… and point guard Chris Paul got 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Chris Paul is an NBA legend who has never gotten a ring… he’s had more shocking injury disappointments than a cat has lives when he has gotten close.  The team needs something to happen now?... Or it is all over for Chris.  He can;t possibly wait for a rebuild  or restructuring.  Soon Chris’s only chance for a ring will be joining a real contender for less money.

The Detroit Pistons have won 2 of their last 10 games which is actually a good stretch for them.  They went 4-6 ATS during that stretch.  Over the next few days anything could happen to the Pistons roster as the trade deadline approaches.  This team is insistent that they lose enough to win the draft lottery and that they build around Cade Cunningham and Victor W (if they do get him)... with that in mind ABSOLUTELY no one else on the roster is safe from the deadline if the team is offered enough future draft compensation. They beat Charlotte… another team in the hunt for the #1 pick and nothing else.

Phoenix Suns VS Detroit Pistons Prediction

Our prediction for Saturday, February 4th is….  Suns 118 - Pistons 111

Bet on the Suns.  The Pistons have not won back to back games in 2023.  They also don’t cover spreads very often when they lose.

NBA Betting Trends

Phoenix is 54-30 ATS after having won 2 of their last 3 games the last 3 seasons.
Detroit is 1-15 ATS when trying to avenge a same season loss this season.
Detroit is 9-13 ATS as a home underdog.

Players To Watch

Suns:  SF/SG Mikal Bridges.  Mikal is a “do it all” type player.  Strong two-way skills… play almost any position.  If the team pulls the plug on this season with a big restructuring trade.  Hopefully they are smart enough to keep Mikal.  Mikal is very sneakily their most useful player.

Pistons: C Jalen Duren.  Jalen is a rookie.  He is considered by many to have been a top-5 talent that fell to the 13th pick in the last draft.  The Charlotte Hornets lucked out by drafting him there… They then proved to be a horrible franchise as they added him to a draft day trade that brought back too little to justify.  If the Pistons do not get the #1 pick… he will be a good piece to build around.. It just will take longer.

COACH

Suns: Monty “long suffering” Williams
Pistons: Dwayne “remember Toronto?” Casey
