A Western Conference matchup between two teams who have no excuses not to reach for GOLD.  The Minnesota Timberwolves have entered a deadly game of “best we can do” with the roster. They traded young guys and picks to get C Rudy Gobert… he is supposed to be the missing piece that plays next to C Karl Anthony Towns!  A Twin Towers situation!  2 massive Centers with different skill sets will somehow make up for all the deficiencies the Wolves have had over the last few seasons.  It may even work.  Right now the results are murky.  The Phoenix Suns are still stacked.  Last season’s unstoppable force that somehow got stopped in the Western Conference Finals is back at the same old game.  That old game is run by old man PG Chris Paul… the team wins because they are strong at every starting position and every bench position.  The question with the Sins will always be can they make it work when the time comes in the postseason. I have and you have no doubt they will get there.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are going through wholesale change and it may take awhile to get it right… but they have all the pieces to make it right.  C Rudy Gobert has only played 7 games in the experiment that is this season.  He is stud when it comes to rebounds and blocked shots, but Minnesota cringes everytime he has to go to the free throw line.  C, but now PF Karl-Anthony Towns is a great 3-point shooter… so now he is stuck to the perimeter.. The reviews have been mixed.  WHY? Well, for starters he is out of the position he has played since he was 10 years old.  A good game plan would be for Kasrl to crash the paint more than he has been from the weak side.  Some dunks will open the 3-point shooting game… Just as it always has! but the real wholesale change is about who this team’s star is?… that is clearly SG Anthony Edwards. Anthony Edwards can hit big shots… he can leave the defense off kilter when he hits the paint.. And he is super athletic.  He is everything the team wanted when they traded for Andrew Wiggins way back in the LeBron in Cleveland (second time) years!  Now they have it.  What does it mean at 4-3?  The secret to this team is that Kyle Anderson may need to play with the starters and Jaden McDaniels may need to keep coming off the bench.  Slo-mo has no expectations of greatness which makes him valuable next to 3 players that do.

The Phoenix Suns are in a season that is all about overcoming.  They have to overcome an outgoing owner who no one will miss.  They have to overcome the loss of Jae Crowder who was a glue guy… they have to overcome the hurt feelings surrounding Deandre Ayton’s contract negotiations… and they will have to overcome losing the Western Conference Finals last season when frankly they were supposed to win. With that all on the table they still have Pg Chris Paul and SG Devin Booker making up the best backcourt in the league at the moment.  Two stars..two different skill sets, both complementing each other.  They also still have SF Mikal Bridges who is the best 2-way player and stat stuffer in the league.  He will never lead the league in anything, but he can get Andre Kirilenko numbers every night.  10, 7, 7, 5.. Sounds good. The Suns depth is impressive but Coach Monty Williamsd will have to learn to use them for longer stretches.  PG Chris Paul is 1000 years old going on 2000 in NBA years… why not sit him more for later?

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Phoenix Suns Prediction

Our prediction for Tuesday, November 1st is….  Timberwolves 120 - Suns 109

Bet on the Timberwolves.  Their twin towers should drown Deandre Ayton, but more importantly SG Anthony Edwards will have his biggest game against Devin Booker.  Plus you get points in your pocket by going with the underdog.

Players To Watch

Timberwolves: C Rudy Gobert.  His defense needs to hold up against guys like Deandre Jordan.  It’s that simple.  That is why he is here.  If he can hold Deandre Jordan to a below average game?.. The experiment works.

Suns: PF Cameron Johnson.  This skinny, good shooter is filling the shoes of PF Jae Crowder who had the build of the best bouncer anywhere in the world.  Cameron MUST hot shots to justify this change.  If he doesn’t.. The team must try and find an enforcer.

Coaches

Timberwolves: Michael “this is the year!” Malone
Suns: Monty “this is the year” Williams
