A Western Conference matchup between a good Grizzlies team with dreams of being great… and a surprising Jazz team that can’t be reasonably explained.  The Memphis Grizzlies are the same fun team they were last season with MVP hopeful PG Ja Morant playing at top form… and PF Jaren Jackson Jr on the injury list where he seems to have carved out a permanent place.  The Grizzlies are 4-2 on the season… winning at a good rate and holding down the fort until late December when JJJ will return.  The Utah Jazz are doing a lot with a little.  We have all heard of addition by subtraction… but seriously how does a team get rid of SG Donovan Mitchell AND Center Rudy Gobert while just drafting super young and tall Center Walker Kessler… and start the season 5-2?  The Utah Jazz has a roster that should be scared of the Memphis Grizzlies… but they literally just beat the Memphis Grizzlies 124-123 in their last game!  And now will shoot to do it again.

The Memphis Grizzlies are a stacked team with young athletic talent.  That has never been in question.  PG Ja Morant so far is the best player picked in his draft and he was picked a spot after PF Zion Williamson.  Ja plays fast and attacks the paint like a modern day, bigger, more athletic Allen Iverson. He is not a pile of hype when people say that he will be an MVP someday.  He is however susceptible to injury with all the crashing and contact. The Grizzlies are so far the #1 scoring team in the NBA (season young yet).  Just like last year when Ja Morant isn;t scoring it’s because SG Desmond Bane IS. Desmond is on a 3-game 30+ point scoring streak.  He hits shots like a young CJ McCollum or Michael Redd.  The Grizzlies are at a disadvantage with both starting SF Zaiire Williams and PF Jaren Jackson Jr out until mid to late December… but it hasn’t slowed the scoring. Swiss Army Knife Dillon Brooks who can play the 2 or the 3 also nabbed 30 points last game… he can put up big games… He also spent last season with considerable time on the injury list.  If this team all got healthy at the SAME time they would have the best depth in the NBA.. yes even as good as Golden State.

The Utah Jazz are a revelation of 1 guy in particular.  SF/PF Lauri Markkanen is finally living up to his billing and draft status.  Healthy finally Lauri came over in the Donovan Mitchell trade with Cleveland.  His 21.4 pts and 9 rbs per game is exactly what this team needed in the wake of both Mitchell and Gobert.  By getting dual production out of 1 guy the floor is now open for Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, and Collin Sexton to fully explore the space.  Rookie Center Walker Kessler doesn’t start but is nabbing 1.6 blocks per game to lead the team… again he has arrived doing exactly what he was billed as having the potential to do. A fun part of the Jazz is being able to see old man Rudy Gay buried on the bench.  He used to be a star on the Memphis Grizzlies and is only holding down the bench for the Jazz to keep getting NBA paychecks… I wonder who he roots for in this one?

Memphis Grizzlies vs Utah Jazz  Bucks Prediction

Our prediction for Monday, October 31st is…. Grizzlies 127 - Jazz 111

PG Ja Morant missed the last game with an illness.  Most people are over the flu in 72 hours.  And that will be about how long it’s been.  If Ja plays the Jazz, who plan on resting PG Mike Conley will get trampled.  Bet on the Grizzlies to win the immediate revenge game.

Players To Watch

Grizzlies: SF Dillon Brooks.  It will be very curious to see how Dillon does the night after a 30 point game.  The way that the Grizzlies are constructed when everyone is healthy Dillon is at best a bunch scorer off the bench.  A 6th man with a solid touch.  If he keeps pounding 30 points in a starter role?... He may get the Grizzlies looking to trade either Zaiire or Jaren Jackson.

Jazz: SF Lauri Markkanen.  Now that we finally get to see him play consistently and be the focus for a team… we may have to readjust what we think of his ceiling. 21 and 9 could go up.

Coaches

Grizzlies: Taylor “Mad Dog” Jenkins
Jazz: Will “Never heard of him” Hardy
