A Western Conference battle of pretty much equal teams.  The Western Conference is knotted among the 3rd to 9th place teams… it is so close that everyone will jump in the standings after a win and fall in the standings after a loss. This game is no exception… If the Clippers win they will jump 4 spots depending on the other Western Conference finishes.  If the Jazz win they will pull away from the Clippers by multiple games.  It is all a bunch of fun.  None of it is really decided until later in the season.  Still this outcome could mean multiple standings spots moved for now.  The Los Angeles Clippers got off to a slow start as they worked to move SF Kawhi Leonard back into the lineup.  He was not as great as his name implies… and he immediately started missing games from soreness to his surgically repaired knee. Hopefully the Clippers  have learned that Kawhi should never be a starter again.  He should be a bench player that you won’t notice is missing if he does miss more time.  The future of the Clipper is PG-13 leading a team of quality role players to wherever they can go. If the team waits for Kawhi’s health they will always be disappointed, but if they don’t worry about him at all they can move forward.  The Utah Jazz started the season HOT!  They won their way into first place with a roster of new players and a hope chest of draft picks after trading BOTH SG Donovan Mitchell and C Rudy Gobert.  The resulting team turned out to be fantastic.. But the season is long and they have started to lose… they have dropped from first place to 7th place and that is just in the last week. The Los Angeles Clippers beat the Indiana Pacers 114-100 in their last game, snapping a two-game losing streak.  It is a good thing they did because the Pacers came back the next night and caught the Lakers sleeping in the 4th quarter… so it is a double win for the Clippers, who play in the Western Conference with the Lakers (in the same city).  The Clippers have won 6 of their last 10… ideally they would need a few sets of 7 wins in ten tries to catch up to contender pace… but still above .500 helps.  In the win, C Ivica Zubac was the star with 31 points and 29 rebounds… nothing more needs to be said.  If the Clippers have found a new Cowboy among the dust of the NBA stampede,. They should ride him to victory more often… if it was an aberration?.. At least they got the win.

The Utah Jazz are on a 4-game losing streak.  It is the sort of streak that causes a 1st place team to rapidly fall to 7th place this early in the season. We don’t know where the Jazz will land… They were expected to be “tanking” but it is clear that they have way too much talent on the roster as is, to make that possible… but where will they ultimately land? The Jazz lost their last game to the Chicago Bulls 114-107… it was also a loss ATS.  In that game SF Lauri Markkanen logged 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 assist.  Lauri is a newly minted star after several seasons of injury and role player status after being a big deal draft pick.  Lauri is real and Utah is the best place for him.  PF Kelly Olynyk had 23 points, SG/PG Collin Sexton had 17 points… The problem wasn’t scoring but toughness. Rookie Center Walker Kessler had 0 points in 5 minutes, but 3 rebounds.  I really think Utah needs to play Walker more and not less. He is part of the future, let him take the lumps now.
