An NBA inter conference matchup between teams destined for greatness but currently mired in mediocrity.  The Brooklyn Nets are in a weird spot (as always)... There are 32 NBA GM’s that would love to have Kyrie Irving’s talent on their roster… That is why Kyrie is a Max Contract player… However there are 32 NBA GM’s (including his current one) that would hate to have Kyrie’s headaches anywhere in their building let alone as a Max player on their roster.  The evolution of Kyrie Irving is in 3 short years… The Brooklyn Nets PG has transformed himself from a Max Player in demand to a guy anyone would be embarrassed to build their team around.  His next few contracts will all be for less than the Max… and for shorter terms as no longer (and for good reason) can any team put their hopes in the Kyrie Irving basket.  The Nets have SF Kevin Durant… but his trade demand is coming… and it will be public.  The Los Angeles Clippers are also in a weird spot.  Their star SF/SG Kawhi Leonard can never again be trusted to be healthy.  He is a wonderful player, a wonderful guy (his teammates say so)... but after 3 seasons of the Clippers not being able to rely on Kawhi’s health?... He is no longer worth being the centerpiece of the team.  SF/PF Paul George is now this team’s star… He is better at leading it too.   Neither team is where they want to be, but at least the Clippers have some depth behind their disappointing star.

The Brooklyn Nets won their last game against the New York Nets without Kyrie or Ben Simmons in the starting lineup… Kyrie was not even in the building.  They are still a losing team, but things have been looking up as the team settles into a regular headache free rotation.  KD had 29 pts, 12 rbs, 12 asts.  That is a great triple double stat line… it is purely dominant across the board. They also got 23 points from Seth Curry.. 18 pts from backup PG Edmond Summer.. And solid work at Center from Nic Claxton with 12 pts, 6 rbs, and 2 asts.  The problem the Nets currently suffer from is not knowing what team will show up?  How could anyone know?... Whether or not Kyrie or Ben Simmons plays… The way to win will always be behind Kevin Durant’s big game with quality contributions from half a dozen unknown players that have little or no trade value.

The Los Angeles Clippers are above .500 for only one reason… They play defense.  It can’t be the scoring where the Clippers are 30th!  Worse than the Orlando Magic!  Bad or no scoring is what the Clipper get by on.  The cream of this Clipper crop is PG-13 (Paul George) who is averaging 25.4 points per game and shutting down opposing stars on defense.  For the last few seasons the Clippers have relied on their deep roster of quality NBA role players to win games… After PG-13… They still have to do that.  They have won their last 2 games (or they would not be above .500)  against the Cavaliers and the Lakers.  The Clippers franchise has won their last 9 straight games against the Los Angeles Lakers and are 34-6 against the Lakers since Jeannie Buss inherited the Lakers.  Beating the Lakers Paul George had 29 pts, 6 rbs, 4 asts…6 other Clippers cored in low double figures… That is absolutely the Clippers plan for winning games… The 1 star gets off big and the rest of the roster flexes their depth. With this formula they were able to overcome a Lakers team that had 30 pts from LeBron, 21 pts from AD and 14 pts and 9 assists from Russell Westbrook.  Any team can beat any group of stars if the role players come through deeply… Just look at the Utah Jazz who are in 1st place in the Western Conference.

Bet on the Clippers.  The Nets may have turned a corner?... but not a corner that provides enough to beat depth.  KD will go off and PG-13 will go off… but the Clippers depth will chew up the Nets depth.  Also the Nets are trying to work Ben Simmons back into the game?... The Clippers welcome a non-shooter anywhere the Nets want to put him on the court.  Bet on the Clippers and add an UNDER.
