NBA: Brooklyn Nets VS Dallas Mavericks Pick and Predictions 11/07/2022

An Eastern Conference versus Western Conference battle between two teams that each have one star of mega talented proportion.  This will be and should be billed as a battle of Kevin Durant versus Luka Doncic.  Kevin has been an MVP and is averaging 31.5 points per game… Luke will be an MVP and is averaging 36 points per game.  Big star who both are surrounded by a collection of role players that must do their best to provide support for the Mega star that is doing all the scoring.  

This season we all have a front row seat to the implosion of the Brooklyn Nets.  The Nets currently have the two biggest headaches in the NBA in PG Kyrie Irving and PF/PG Ben Simmons.  The team was billed as a super team, but it is immediately clear that both Kyrie and Ben are unfixable head cases.  Even though Kyrie is wrong just about every time he opens his mouth… he considers himself the smartest guy to have ever lived.  The result is a player who will destroy whatever team he is on.  Ben was a high quality defender and assist man who couldn’t shoot  just two seasons ago.  Then something happened to Ben… he internalized criticism he was getting from fans and the media… and now he is so shy of doing anything on the court that he simply can’t do any of it.  It’s a good thing the Nets aren’t paying Ben a MAX salary… oh wait they are.  For Kevin Durant’s end of things it is widely believed that behind the scenes Kevin has restated his trade demands and will shut it down soon if he doesn’t get shipped out.  This version of the ZNets is a losing team… Yet two great things happened to them.  Kyrie got suspended by the team for anti-semitism, and Ben landed on the injury list with knee trouble… the result:  Without those knuckleheads this BAD Nets team has won 3 of 4 games… The last two straight!   This does often happen in the NBA… it’s called addition by subtraction… a terrible or in this case two terrible stars leave or go down and the team starts doing better… Why?... Because now everyone can focus on the important things:  Basketball and Kevin Durant.

The Dallas Mavericks have gotten used to witnessing history with PG Luka Doncic… Most triple doubles before 21 years old, team records for single season production, highest usage rate and PER stat in such and such… but to start this season Luka landed himself on a list that now contains just Luka and Wilt Chamberlain… that stat is most 30 point games in a row to start a season. Luka has 30+ points in all 8 of the games so far with the count growing.  Luka is the heart and soul of the team and will determine how far this team goes.  That is a good and a bad thing for a basketball team.  What Luka needs more than anything is a Scottie Pippen.  Luka needs an all-star sidekick more than most people need anything.  If he had an all-star defender who could stuff a statsheet while playing without the ball?  The Mavs would be unstoppable.  As it is now they are 5-3 on the season for 6th place in the West. The season is early but as has been the case for the last 3 seasons… Luka leads the Mavs in points, assists, rebounds, and steals.  The Mavs added C/PF Christian Wood in the offseason in hopes that he could be that guy.  Christain started the season strong with back to back 25 point games… but it was determined Christian’s offense was not worth his defensive deficiencies… and C Dwight Powell is back amongst the starters.  If I were Mark Cuban I would make the Nets a quick offer of Wood, Finney-Smith, and Hardaway Jr plus some picks for Durant as long as I had them in the building.  I would have to give them several alcoholic beverages beforehand… but still it’s worth a shot.

The Nets are 18th in scoring with 112.2 points per game, 28th in rebounds with 40 per game, 7th in AST/TO ratio with 1.9, and 1st on blocked shots with 8.4 per game.

The Mavericks are 10th in scoring with 115.1 points per game, 29th in rebounds with 40 per game, 25th in AST/TO ratio with 1.5, and 24th in blocked shots with 4.1 per game.

Our prediction for Monday, November 7th is….  Mavericks 118 - Nets 110

Bet on the Mavericks.  Yes the Nets started winning once Kyrie and Ben were gone from the lineup but that was against the Pacers, the Wizards, and the Hornets… Not exactly a murderers row.  The last time these teams played the Mavs won 129 - 125 in overtime… that was with Kyrie scoring 39 points.  The Mavs should run away with this one.
