An NBA battle of history.  East versus West… Celtics versus Lakers.  The two winningest franchises in NBA history who are tied together by both Championships and head to head matchup that have determined those Championships.  The Celtics have 3 all-star players… The Lakers have two.  The Celtics have been bitten by the injury bug but are in 1st place in the league… The Lakers are relatively injury free but are in 12th place in the West.  The Celtics have depth.  The Lakers have no depth.  Yet before you go making a wager… let’s look at who is out, who is in?... and the numbers.

The Boston Celtics are an unstoppable force.  They win basketball games at a rate that would make them a favorite to win it all.  They have an NBA MVP candidate in Jayson Tatum, his Robin in Jaylen Brown,,, and the both have an Alfred in PG Marcus Smart… but they are missing their big men at both Center and Power Forward.  They lost their last game to the Golden State Warriors 123 - 107.  In that game the lack of a big man cost the Celtics dearly as mediocre C Kevon Looney got all the rebounds and second chance points the paint could offer. SG Jayen Brown was the Celtics star for the night which he is at a rate of about 1 in every 3 games.  The bad game came from the actual Celtics star SF Jayson Tatum who shot 6 for 21 from the field and finished with 18 points… It was a performance reminiscent of last season’s finals when Jayson suddenly couldn’t score… It is also why he is distant in the MVp race though in the MVP race he is.

The Los Angeles Lakers are a very stoppable force.  They lose basketball games… though have gotten better lately. The Lakers \have the best player on basketball of the last 2 decades in PF LeBron James, but his only help is C Anthony Davis and only when that guy is healthy… after them the team is devoid of productive talent that might be appealing to another team.  The “trade” proposal in the press is PG/SG Russell Westbrook and his $40 million a season expiring contract for the Indiana Pacers SG Buddy Hield (forced to play small forward) and Center Myles Turner… The reason the 4th place in the Eastern Conference Indiana Pacers would want to do that is insanely unclear.  After Russ the Lakers roster is made up of undrafted free agents pressed into action and busts that came whimpering in to resurrect their careers after other teams gave up on them.  It is a sad state for Laker lane.  However this game/bet is not about rosters… It is about who would win IF the Celtics can;t get good big man play and have to play LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Lakers are 3-10 ATS as an underdog of 3.5 to 9.5 points.
The Celtics are 15-10 as a favorite this season.

Players To Watch

Celtics: C Blake Griffin.  Blake is experiencing an odd homecoming,  He is playing in Crypto.com Arena… that used to be Staples.  It is the same place he was among the top-3 players in the league… and a true Superstar.  He is playing in font of the same faces… and he is playing out of his normal position… no longer a superstar… he must now present himself as an NBA role player… It must be hard AND exciting.  His play against Anthony Davis will actually decide the outcome.

Lakers: SG/SF Austin Reeves.  An undrafted guy who was a big star on an Oklahoma State basketball team 2 years ago.  He is now the third best player on the Lakers on most nights… not because he is so good, but because the Lakers depth is rather empty.  When Austin puts up 18-22 points the Lakers are doing great!… but when he is on his back because Jaes Harden put him there on the way to a lay-up?... He is emblematic of what is wrong with the Lakers.  No depth.  Austin is the key.
