A DRASTIC mismatch in the Eastern Conference of the NBA.  A quiet Monday night on League pass will treat you to a wild disparity of talent.  The Boston Celtics are the East’s and possibly the league’s best team at this exact moment in time… All of New England is waiting for the ticker tape parade that everyone feels is possible this season.  They have a powerful trio of skill players in SF Jayson Tatum, SG Jaylen Brown, and PG Marcus Smart… and even though Marcus Smart is Out at the moment… still 2 of the Celtics bench players at guard would be starters on the Pistons if they wore that uniform… Malcolm Brogdon and Derrick White.  The Celtics also have smart big men in PF Al Horford and C Robert Williams III… two guys that play at a high level and are integral to the current winning ways.  The Detroit Pistons have NOTHING.  The Pistons are the worst team in the league and rival the Houston Rockets for the title of worst team in the league.  It is made even worse in that they are terrible ON PURPOSE.  The Pistons have all their current hopes tied to last season’s 1st pick of the draft in PG Cade Cunningham… and all of their future hopes tied to winning this season’s NBA draft lottery and pairing Cade with 7’4 french teenager Victor Wembanyama… who is the closest thing to Kareem Abdul Jabbar entering the league since Kareem Abdul Jabbar entered the league.  The Pistons don’t want to win.. And if they make any trades at the deadline it will be for only future picks in the draft and not players they can use now.  So what do the Pistons put on the court?... A collection of young, second rate, players who will guarantee the losses they want.  The great betting opportunity here is in finding the right number the Celtics will win by and matching that to the spread… That is all.

The Boston Celtics have won only 6 of their last 10 games.  I say “only” because it may be the worst stretch of ten games of the season so far.  They are suffering from the absence of Marcus Smart and the grind of having won more games than anyone except Denver out West who has as many.  They lost their last game to the Phoenix Suns 106-94. In the loss Tatum had 20 points on a horrible shooting night (3 of 15), Jaylen Brown had 27 points on a similarly bad shooting night (9 of 21), and the power forward position really drew a blank when Al Horford had only 3 points in 30 minutes and his backup PF Grant Williams had ZERO points in 21 minutes.  It was a bad night.  And the fact that they are 2-4 over their last 6 games… is indicative of all the lumps and tiredness that winning teams can experience leading up to the much needed all-star break.

The Detroit Pistons have won 3 of their last 10 games beating Charlotte, Brooklyn, and Minnesota… so basically they have beaten teams with terrible turmoil on the roster at the moment.   They have gone 4-6 ATS during the 10 game stretch… They failed to cover an 11 point spread against Milwaukee and failed to cover an 8.5 point spread against the Knicks.  They also “last” lost to the Phoenix Suns 116-100.  In the loss Detroit got 23 points out of forward Bojan Bogdanovic… exactly the guy MOST on the trading block as contenders look for extra pieces going into the deadline.  Forward Saddiq Bey came off the bench for 25 points in 34 minutes of play, but everyone on the roster ended up with a negative +/- score.

Boston Celtics VS Detroit Pistons Preview and Analysis

The Celtics are 3rd in scoring with 117.7 points per game, 7th in rebounds with 44.9 per game. On defense they rank 7th against scoring while holding opponents to 111.9 points per game.  They are a team that is modeled almost entirely after the BIG THREE… They are great 2-way offense/defense. They may be struggling at the moment but should have no worries against the Pistons.

The Pistons are 23rd in scoring with 112.5 points per game and 21st in rebounds with 42.4 per game.  On defense they rank a terrible 29th in the league while allowing 119.8 points per game.  This atrocious -7 points per game… may be why they are the worst thing on an NBA court anywhere.

Boston Celtics VS Detroit Pistons Prediction

Our prediction for Monday, February 6th is….  Celtics 122 - Detroit 99

Blow Out Alert.  The Celtics have built up some disappointment and frustration the last week or so… they will get to take it out on the NBA’s JV Squad. Even if the Celtics decided to sit Brown and Tatum… The remaining Celtics starting five would be the best 5 players on the court.

NBA Betting Trends

Detroit is 4-1 ATS versus Boston at Detroit the last 3 seasons.
Detroit is 7-2 ATS versus Boston overall the last 3 seasons.
Boston is 1-7 ATS when playing on 2 days rest this season.

Players To Watch

Celtics: SG Jalen Brown.  Jalen is a high quality 2-way player no matter who he is playing against.  His role is often seen as Robin to Tatum’s Batman but that would be to sell him short.  Brown is capable of big numbers on any given night and most often the best wing defender on the court.

Piston:  PF/SF Bojan Bogdanovic… Watch Bojan closely as this may be his last Pistons game.. And if he is not traded he will be sat more often to avoid any pesky wins that would ruin the point of the whole season.  The guy can shoot and is an average defender.

COACH

Celtics: Joe “dream job” Mazzula
Pistons: Dwayne “nightmare job” Casey
