A Western Conference battle that is much closer in the standings than they are in the point spread. There are reasons for that… the chief reason is of course, the Mavericks added Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline so they have MUCH MORE firepower than the Jazz. A smaller reason the point spread is because of injuries to the Jazz…. An even smaller reason is that the Jazz have shifted to tanking mode… They just lost 2 games in a row to the lowly OKC Thunder. The Jazz if they fall just a bit will have very small chances of winning the NBA draft lottery… BUt since the Jazz have multiple first round picks… and since the league shifted to selecting the first FIVE picks in the lottery instead of the first THREE … small chances can pay off. The great betting opportunity here is in the point spread and who will play.
The Utah Jazz have won only 4 of their last 10 games. They are on a 3-game losing streak and they have gone 4-5-1 ATS during that stretch. They lost their last game to the OKC Thunder when they were sitting team star SF Lauri Markkanen. They got 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 BLOCKED SHOTS from C Walker Kessler, 18 points & 12 assist from SG Jordan Clarkson who has been playing PG, and 15 points & 10 rebounds from PF Kelly Olynyk. The Jazz have a good roster and 6 picks over the next 3 drafts to improve it… Hopefully they make the right moves.
The Dallas Mavericks have won only 4 of their last 10 games. They have had a momentous change in the lineup during that stretch when they traded for PG/SG Kyrie Irving .. the result has been only 2 wins in their last 8 games… but the pair of dynamic guards have been scoring and improving chemistry. They lost their last game to the Phoenix Suns 130-126. Few teams will beat the Suns from here on out. In the loss they got 34 points from PG Luka Doncic and 30 points from SG Kyrie Irving… just a night after the pair got 40 points each in a win over Philadelphia. The trick for this team will not be scoring… It will all be about: “Who will play defense while we are scoring?”

Jazz: C Walker Kessler. Walker was taken with the 22nd pick of the 2022 NBA draft. He is outperforming Jalen Duran and Mark Williams who were taken LONG before him. Walker routinely posts insane blocked shots numbers… like his last game when he got 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 BLOCKED SHOTS. His team isn’t ready… and the scary thing is neither is HE. He will get more comfortable in this league and will be a starter for the next decade easily. He already has replaced C Rudy Gobert as if Rudy was never there.
Mavs: C/PF Christian Woods. Christian was brought in from the Houston Rockets for Offense. It had to be for offense because his defense is not great. He occupies an enviable position in this league… he plays with both Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving… so maybe his offense isn’t needed as much as an improvement on defense would be?... Maybe he will be on the move again this offseason to someone who has the defense and needs the offense?
