An NBA inter conference matchup between two teams with near identical records.  Strap in because the 8th place East team is visiting the 9th place West team for a showdown of Playoff wannabees!  The Atlanta Hawks haven’t been turning the world on this season.  There is a major disconnect between what they want to accomplish and how they are playing… so much of a disconnect that Head Coach Nate McMillian was fired to make way for New Head Coach Quin Snyder… While we normally get firings in mid-season?... We rarely get the immediate hire of a successor to finish the season… Usually there is an interim coach that bridges the gap and has a shot for the job BEFORE they bring in the guy they wanted all along.  Hint:  The problem wasn’t the coach… It’s that Trae Young thinks he is the best player on the team… when Dejounte Murray actually is… and Trae does very little to lift the game of SF DeAndre Hunter… making Hunter look like a disappointment when he shouldn’t.  The Minnesota Timberwolves have a similar roster confusion.  The best player should be SG Anthony Edwards.. While the guy who thinks he is the best player is PF/C Karl-Anthony Towns.  Towns hasn’t played this season because of injury… BUT when he does return he will and should be immediately traded for pieces… He would thrive with the Heat, Pacers, or Pistons… In Minnesota he has too much of a losing track record.  To make it clear that Anthony Edwards is in charge the Timberwolves jettisoned PG D’Angelo Russell to the Lakers as part of a bigger deal that brought back very little when you look at it closely.  The great betting opportunity here will be found in the recent trends and healthy players… who has been playing better over the last 5-10 games?… and who will be the matchup that gets exploited?

The Atlanta Hawks have won 5 of their last 10 games.  Going 5-5 ATS during that stretch.  They won their last game against the Detroit Pistons 129-107… a big win over a HUGE 13.5 points spread… but then everyone is doing that to the Pistons.  In the win the Hawks got 30 points & 12 assists from PG Trae Young, 18 points from SG Bojan Bogdanovic, and 15 points & 8 rebounds from PF John Collins. Dejounte Murray did not play because of injury.. He is currently listed as Day to Day.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have won 5 of their last 10 games.  They have struggled recently with an injury to SG Anthony Edwards… Edwards is listed as Day to Day for this game.  They went 6-4 ATS during that stretch.  They are currently the Western Conference team that is most dreading having to play the Lakers in the Play-In game… with a healthy LeBron and against their former PG… the Timberwolves will definitely struggle.  They won their last game against the New York Knicks 140-134 while they were 8 point road underdogs. In the win they got 35 points from SF Taureen Prince who was filling in at SG for the absent Anthony Edwards.  They also got 24 points & 11 assists from PG Mike Conley… who may be 100 years old in NBA years, but still maintains his professionalism and runs a good game.

Bet on the Wolves.  They will win and cover at home.  The Wolves are finding that several bench players are ready to contribute AND Anthony Edwards will be returning at the same time.  It bodes well for how they will be able to finish the season.

Hawks: PG Trae Young.  Stat Stuffer and diminutive sharp shooter.  Trae is a good kid… He clearly likens his game after Steph Curry of the Warriors… but the All-NBA glory team he was threatening to be the captain of a few seasons ago is slipping out of his grasp.  OKCs Shai Gilgeous Alexander and Donovan Mitchell of the Cavs have surpassed him in the impactful Guard category… and to make matters worse the NBA as a whole has been shifting to an era of big guards who want to be LeBron. The Hawks enjoy him.. But he isn’t a world beater yet… and may never get there.

Timberwolves: C Rudy Gobert.  The T-Wolves traded a record haul of picks to the Utah Jazz for Rudy and are getting results like 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists against the Knicks.  That is just not worth what they gave up.  We all knew Rudy was not an A+ scorer… but for his cost the T-Wolves were expecting him to lead the league in rebounds and blocks… he isn’t even close.
