Season Record

Giants: 51-55,3rd place NL West
Athletics: 41-66, 5th place AL West

A non-conference matchup between a National League West team that is a bit of a disappointment this season after a great season last year… and an American League West team that is a historical disappointment.  The Giants have seen better days and better health.  Their 107 wins from last season are a distant memory as they struggle to hold on to a .500 record this season… and are losing that battle.  The Athletics are a horrible dumpster fire of poor ownership, poor planning, skimpy spending, and a deep desire to move the team (yes, like the movie Major League) through losing.  The Athletics draw less fans than Carrot Top does in Vegas (not a knock on Carrot Top).  I’m told the FBI has stashed 3 guys in the Witness Protection Program in the Athletics bullpen… I’d tell you who they are, but I have never felt the need to watch any athletics game this season.  It’s for the best that you do not watch the Athletics until they are in Vegas under new ownership.  Still this is a great betting opportunity!  This is a two-foot putt for birdie. This is as much a no brainer as buying a lemonade from a neighborhood kids stand even though you know you won’t be drinking it.   The Giants will be heavily favored which has become rare as of late… The Athletics will give up runs early and then again late.  Let’s check the numbers… and then you know what to do… the question is do we parlay the OVER or the UNDER with the moneyline bet?

The San Francisco Giants have won just 3 of their last 10 games.  They have lost starters in droves to the injury list.  They have the advantage here because few Athletics could start over the Giants reserves if in the same uniform.  They got SWEPT by the Los Angeles Dodgers 0-4, went 3-1 against the Chicago Cubs, and 0-2 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The dregs of the NL West are the Rockies and the Diamondbacks and the Giants have struggled with them… that could give you pause, but it shouldn’t.  The Giants are a quality organization having a bad year. They will reload in the next off-season.  The good news is this is not the NBA and the Giants have no incentive to tank games.

The Oakland Athletics are silly bad.  They have won 6 of their last 10 games in what may have been their best ten day stretch in a long time.  They went 2-1 against the Los Angeles Angels, 1-2 against the Chicago White Sox, they SWEPT the Houston Astros (amazing!!) 3-0, and lost to the Rangers 0-1 during that stretch.  The Sweep of the Astros truly is amazing… it is the sort of thing that would give a gambler pause in a game like this… don’t let it.  This is baseball… the short term numbers can get wacky… while the long term numbers stay reliable.

San Francisco Giants vs Oakland Athletics Prediction

Our Prediction for Sunday, August 7th is….  Giants 6 - A’s 3

The Giants should jump all over the Athletics in Game 1.  The Giants playing in Oakland (just a couple miles from their own stadium) means this is actually a Giants home game. The A’s only bring in about 3000 fans when an out of towner comes in… but when the Giants take the field several thousand Giants fans will take the simple train ride across the bridge.  The cheers will be for the Giants while the boos will be for the A’s.  Bet on the Giants on the moneyline and take the smaller pay-out.
