Season Record

Padres: 70-59, 2nd place NL West
Giants: 61-65, 3rd place NL West

A National League West matchup between the 2nd place and 3rd place team in the division.  Does this mean the winner will have a better chance to contend?... No.  The San Diego Padres may be in 2nd place to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, but they are still 19.5 games back…. The San Francisco Giants may be in 3rd place in the NL West, but they are 4 games below .500.  The Padres did everything to build a contender this season… They signed Manny Machado two seasons ago, and traded for Juan Soto this season, and were patiently waiting for Fernando Tatis Jr to return from injury to build a juggernaut of a line-up…. Of course that all blew up when Tatis Jr tested positive for banned substances and will now miss the rest of the season (and some of next season?).  The Padres are emotionally spent and it shows in the recent, constant, horrible losing.  The Giants won the division last season with the most 100+ wins by just 1 win more than the Dodgers.  This season they look like the ghost of themselves… little teamwork, missing some guys who signed elsewhere in the offseason, a full injury list… a sad lifeless below .500 record.  There is no turn around coming.  Let’s check the pitching matchup to see if we can find a great betting opportunity.

The San Diego Padres have won 5 of their last 10 games… causing them to fall even further behind the Dodgers.  The Padres are hanging in there because they have slightly better than average hitting and a pretty good top-10 or top-11 pitching rotation.  Neither set of numbers screams “ready to turn it around”. Padres fans are already talking about next season when Tatis Jr does return… and how this off-season is prime for signing a quality pitcher.  It’s all talk no action in San Diego at the moment.  They went 2-1 against the Kansas City Royals, 0-2 against the Cleveland Guardians, 2-2 against the Washington Nationals, and 1-0 against the Miami Marlins.

The San Francisco Giants have won only 2 of their last 10 games. They are on a 4-game losing streak.  Pitchers Alex Wood, Alex Cobb, and Logan Webb all got credited with 2 losses during this stretch.  The pitching numbers are tanking… The Giants scoring is average for the league at the moment… but their batting average is poor.  That is indicative of “hero hitting”... exactly the opposite of how they played last season when they won 107 regular season games.  They have gone 0-3 against the Minnesota Twins, 1-1 against the Detroit Tigers, 1-2 against the Colorado Rockies, and 0-2 against the Arizona Cardinals… Taking so many losses to the Rockies and Diamondbacks (both NL West teams below them in the standings) is further proof this team has no fire.

San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Prediction

Our Prediction for Tuesday, August 30th is…. Giants 5 - Padres 4

Bet on the Giants on the moneyline.  The Padres are not great and the Giants have the better pitcher starting.  It may be foolhardy to put money on the Giants, but that is why the Moneyline will pay you a little bit more.

Giants: 3B E Longoria (hamstring) Quest , 1B Brandon Belt (knee) Out, 3B Chris Welker (shoulder) Out,

Players to Watch

Padres: LHP Blake Snell, 4-24 ERA, 116 strikeouts in 87 innings pitched, 1.34 WHIP.  This 29 year old can really strike guys out!  Too bad it doesn’t translate into wins this season.

Giants: RHP Logan Webb, 11-7, 3.33 ERA, 130 strikeouts in 159 innings pitched.  1.19 WHIP.  This 25 year old is having a good season for a bad team…He has good career numbers as well (27-17)... It’s a big worry that he is on a 2-game losing streak.

Starting Lineups
Padres: DH Jurickson Profar, RF Juan Soto, 3B Juan Soto, 1B Josh Bell, 2B Brandon Drury, SS Jake Cronenworth, LF Will Myers, CF Trent Grisham, C Luis Campusano

Giants: CF Austin Slater, DH Wilmer Flores, LF Lamonte Wade Jr, 3B Evan Longoria, 1B JD Davis, SS Brandon Crawford, 2B Thairo Estrada, C Austin Wynns, RF Mike Yastremski

Managers

Padres: Bob “um ma ma” Melvin
Giants: Gabe “how bout them eyebrows!” Kapler

Weather Forecast

Mostly Sunny, 67*, Humidity 75%, wind 15 mph, Precipitation 10%.  San Francisco weather in the summer is like other places' weather in a rainy fall.  San Fran is not warm, or fun… it’s also expensive.  Whatever you do there, do not dare to eat those almonds in the honor bar!... They will get another $25 out of your credit card.
