Season Record

Padres: 54-42, 2nd place NL West
Tigers: 38-57, 4th place AL Central

The Padres of the National League West are coming off a good series against the New York Mets where they were able to snag a few wins (and have a chance at a sweep Sunday night).  The Padres desperately needed these wins!  The Padres have been full-time strugglers as of late. Relying heavily on 2nd stringers as they await the return of Fernando Tatis Jr to make or break their season.  The Tigers of the American League Central, on the other hand, are junk.  They don’t want to be… but they are a junk AL Central team that is already eliminated from the postseason unless a double Seattle sized winning streak is heading their way.  It is not.  However they do occasionally grab a bright spot and win a game or two.  The Tigers have Javier Baez and Miguel Cabrera… which would be great half a decade ago when they mattered.

The San Diego Padres have won 5 of their last ten games.  They are on a 2-game winning streak against the New York Mets before going into Game-3 that will close out the series.  They went 2-0 against the Mets, 2-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-3 against the Colorado Rockies, and 0-1 against the San Francisco Giants over that stretch.  The bad part of the stretch is obviously so many losses to the Colorado Rockies… of course the Rockies have been built with only competing with National League West teams in mind.  The Rockies aren’t good… but they are built in response to these teams.  The Padres have Manny Machado… that is a great start.

The Detroit Tigers have won only 2 of their last ten games.  This horrible win percentage has become standard working procedure over the last month.  They are on a 2-game losing streak.  They went 0-1 against the Minnesota Twins, 1-1 versus the Oakland Athletics, 0-3 against the Cleveland Indians, 1-3 versus the Kansas City Royals.  If the Tigers were in a better division of baseball they would have a much worse record… instead they are in the worst division in baseball and they have a regular BAD record.  When you are getting trounced by the Indians and the Royals… there is literally no suny future you can point to.

The Tigers are 30th in scoring with 3.14 runs per game, 27th in batting average with .228, and 29th in OBP with .286.  It all goes badly at the plate.

The Padres pitchers are 10th in ERA with 3.77, 6th in WHIP with 1.20, and 2nd in errors with only 38 on the season so far.

San Diego Padres vs Detroit Tigers Athletics Prediction

Our Prediction for Monday, July 25th is….  Padres 6 - Tigers 2

The bet is on the Padres on the moneyline plus an OVER.  The score can break lots of ways so I don’t want you betting ATS.  Still the Padres are due for a stretch of winning against the Tigers.  The numbers are too explosive for a team like the Padres to not run away with a big scoring win.

MLB Betting Trends

Key Injuries

Padres: SS Fernando Tatis JR (wrist) OUT ** LF W. Meyers (knee) ** M. Beaty (shoulder) Out

Tigers: CF A. Meadows (achilles) Out ** C J. Rogers (elbow) Out ** Plus they are missing 5 starting pitchers and 5 relief pitchers… this is a team that has no pitching… and no offense.

Players to Watch

Padres: LHP Sean Manea, 5-4, 4.11 ERA, 100 strikeouts in 100 innings pitched.  1.23 WHIP.  The Manealator (bad nickname by unfeeling teammates) is a 30 year old beast on the mound.  He has a chance to finish his career out as an ACE for a good Padres team. He will need to win more games to reach that plateau.

Tigers: RHP, 1-4, 4.46 ERA, 25 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.  1.39 WHIP.  “Hutch” is a bad MLB pitcher who will give up many many runs before he is pushed out to pasture.  Save your money guy.

Starting Lineups

Padres: LF Jurickson Purifar, 1B jake Cronenworth, 3B Manny Machado, C Jorge Alfaro, DH Luke Voit, SS ha-Seong Kim, CF Trent Grisham, RF Esteurty Ruiz, 2B Matthew Batten

Tigers: CF Riley Greene, SS Javier Baez, RF Robbie Grossman, DH Miguel Cabrera, 1B Harold Castro, 3B Jeimer Candelario, 2B Jonathan Schoop, C Tucker Barnhart, LF Akil Baddoo

Managers

Padres: Bob “um ma ma um” Melvin
Tigers: A.J. “Remember me with the Astros?” Hinch

Weather Forecast

Mostly Sunny, 79*, Humidity 45% Wind 11 mph…. Precipitation 0% chance… That is a solid day for baseball.
