Season Record

Pirates: 45-66, 4th place NL Central (but 16.5 games back)
Giants: 54-57, 3rd place NL West (but 23.5 games back)

Game 2 of a series that will waffle either direction depending on the pitching matchup.

A National League Matchup between the 4th place Central team and the 3rd place West team.  This matchup is not great.  This matchup will not determine anything about the postseason.  This matchup is a great betting opportunity as you build your bankroll prior to the football season… and nothing else.  The Pirates are junk in a junk division.  The Giants are a formally great team that could not hold it together.  In fact the Giants were the best regular season team in the league last season… and when the talent left they fell down a well,  So, the question you must have is… How real are any of these numbers?... and who should I try to make money off of?... And where are my car keys cause I forgot it was my anniversary  (that is just me)?  The answers will be in the stats… the answers will be in the pitching matchup. Also I hope my wife has no idea that the Dodgers have put me up $24,080 since the beginning of August… cause that would require more than the bouquets I can find at Trader Joe’s.  Then we get to whether or not this is a great betting opportunity?... It is… let’s check the pitching matchup.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won 5 of their last 10 games.  They are terrible at the plate… and not so great on the mound.  In fact they are awful on the mound… That might be why they are in 4th place out of 5 teams in the worst division in baseball… or almost as bad as the AL Central depending on your view.  They went 1-2 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-2 against the Baltimore Orioles, 3-0 against the Milwaukee Brewers (who stink) and 0-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies.  RHP Bryce Wilson won two games as a starter during that stretch… but he was the only one. This team is bottom of the barrel when we check the stats.

The San Francisco Giants have won 4 of their last ten games.  Part of that stretch is a spanking from the Los Angeles Dodgers that led to a Dodgers SWEEP.  They went 1-2 against the San Diego Padres, 2-0 against the Oakland A’s, 0-4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and 1-0 against the Chicago Cubs.  It is very hard to take any team seriously if they beat the Oakland A’s twice while going 4-6 over ten games.  The Giants are an OK batting team except in their team batting average and they are a below average pitching team.  After last season’s excellence this is actually embarrassing.

MLB Betting Trends

Pittsburgh is 1-11 when the total is 7 or less this season,
Pittsburgh is 1100-1653 as an underdog of +100 or higher since 1997 (-133 Units).
The Giants are 126-71 as a favorite of 1110 or higher the last 3 seasons.
The Giants are 101-69 in home games the last 3 seasons.

Key Injuries

Pirates: C Josh Godoy (fatigue) Quest ** C T Heineman (groin) Out ** CF C Smith-Njigba (wrist) Out ** C R Perez (hammy) Out… so how many catchers do they ultimately need?

Giants: C j Bart (ankle) Out ** 3B C Welker (shoulder) Out **

Players to Watch

Pirates: TBD

Giants: RHP Logan Webb, 10-5, 3.17 ERA, 115 strikeouts in 142 innings pitched.  1.15 WHIP.  The 25 year old is better than anything the Twins have in store when they decide on their TBD.

Starting Lineups

Pirates: SS Kevin Newman, DH Bryan Reynolds, 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes, RF Ben Gamel, 1B Michael Chavis, 2B Rodolfo Castro, CF Greg Allen, LF Tucupita Marcano, C Jason Delay

Giants:  CF Austin Slater, 2B Wilmer Flores, 1B Brandon Belt, DH Evan Longoria, 3B JD Davis, RF Mike Yastremski, SS Thairo Estrada, C Austin Wynns, LF Luis Gonzalez

Managers

Pirates: Derek “not a country singer” Shelton
Giants: Gabe “ How bout them eyebrows” Kapler

Weather Forecast

Partly Cloudy, 72*, HUMIDITY 67%, Wind 18 mph.  The San Francisco Bay is windy… and it supplies ample humidity… so even though the temperature will be lower for August from just about anywhere you are coming from…. It will not be more comfortable.  Stay out of the water if you can… The Bay is home to 16+ foot great white sharks.. Those guys do not care what your favorite ballclub is.
