Season Record

Yankees:  79-64 (4th place, AL East)
Orioles:  46-97 (5th place, AL East)

The Yankees have gone cold over the last few weeks falling from second to third to fourth place, while the rest of the American League East is still battling.  This three-game series against the Orioles could not have come at a better time. The Yankees will need to use this stretch to restart the offense, work out the kinks, and get their heads straight.  The 9 game fireworks finale to finish the season will be three games against the Boston Red Sox, three games against the Toronto Blue Jays, and finishes with 3 games against the Tampa Bay Rays. That stretch will define the entire season for the Bronx Bombers.

Yankees vs Orioles Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Yankees are 2-8 over their last ten games.  Logging 5 Overs and 5 Unders.  They went 1-2 against THESE Baltimore Orioles, losing a four-game stand to the Toronto Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium 0-4, 1-2 against the New York Mets.  A rough ten games that may have lost them a shot at the wild card race.

The Orioles are 5-5 over their last ten games. Hitting 5 Overs, 4 Unders and 1 Push.  They beat THESE Yankees 2-0, went 2-2 against the Kansas City Royals, 0-3 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Offensive Analysis

The Yankees are 23rd in team batting average .236, 19th in runs scored 619, 10th in home runs 187.  These numbers have fallen recently, the result of the losing streak that afflicted the team through the first half of September.

The Baltimore Orioles are 15th in team batting average .240, 25th in runs scored 600, 15th in home runs 178, and 27th in BB 401.  They have guys that can hit the ball:  Cedric Mullins, Ryan Mountcastle, they just don’t hit well as a team.

Defensive Analysis

The Yankees pitchers are 7th in team ERA 3.78, 4th in strikeouts, 6th in WHIP 1.20.  The defense is propping up the offense this season with strong pitching. Guys like Nestor Cortes and Jordan Montgomery have been slinging it well.

The Orioles have terrible pitching.  Right now in the season it is the result of calling up the prospects and giving them starts to gain experience.  At 40+ games out of first place it is the best use of the mound.  They are 30th (last) in team ERA 5.93, 27th in strikeouts 1118, 30th (last) in WHIP 1.49.  On Sunday (9/12)  the Orioles gave up 22 runs to the Blue Jays.  They lost 22-7.

Players to Watch

The Yankees starting pitcher will be righty Gerrit Cole.  14-7, 2.78 ERA, 217 strikeouts in 115 innings of work, 0.99 WHIP.  The 31 year old is having another solid year on the mound.  His career 115-62 record with a 3.15 ERA completely validates the Pittsburgh Pirates drafting Gerrit out of UCLA with the #1 overall pick in 2011.  He’s an Ace.  He lost his last outing, which was against the Toronto Blue Jays, while giving up 5 hits, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs in 3.2 innings.  He will be looking to bounce back with a great game!

The Orioles will be going another direction on the mound.  They will start Alexander Wells. 1-2, 7.15 ERA, 17 SO in 22 innings, 1.90 WHIP.  Alexander had his debut in June and has hung out in the Orioles Bullpen, making short appearances in about 8 games. In the 22 innings so far he has given up 32 hits, 4 home runs with 18 runs scored against him.  The 24 year old Australian will get shelled by the Yankee line-up.
