Season Record
Mets: 78-44, 1st place NL East
Yankees: 73-48, 1st pace AL East
The Subway series is here! New York versus New York! Mets and Yankees! The #1 team in the AL East will play the #1 team in the NL East. Both New York teams rocketed to the top of the league at the start of the season. Both New York teams sent a cadre of players to the All-Star game! Both New York teams had their fans dreaming of a World Season win! Then August bit them both in the ass. It’s that simple. These teams are still great and still have wonderful records… but the shine is dipping. The New York Mets will come into Game 1 against the Yankees on a two game losing streak and having recently gotten punished by the Atlanta Braves in 3 of four games… That leaves them at .500 over the last 10. The Yankees will come into this series either losers of 8 of their last ten games or losers of 7 of their last 10 games depending on the results of the game they are playing now (Sunday afternoon). It has not been a good recent stretch for either team. The good news is they are both still in first place in their divisions… they both have plenty of baseball yet to play… and the bad news is that they both need to right the ship while playing each other.
The New York Mets have won 5 of their last ten games but are losing the game they are playing now (sunday afternoon). The Mets have great stats… top five in batting and top five in pitching. Those are some good numbers. Their weakness is an injury list that has crept up and stolen a month (minimum) of Carrasco from the mound… and completely snatched SS Escobar for the season. These are hurdles that will need to be compensated for. They went 2-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies, 1-3 against the Atlanta Braves, and 2-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies (again).
The New York Yankees have won only 2 of their last 10 games… Going back even a few games further you find more and more recent losses. They were touted as on pace for the best season maybe ever… That is out the window now. They are great at scoring with a mediocre batting average, maybe thanks to home run hitter Aaron Judge. The Yankees strength is that they are firmly a top-three team in pitching. Their injury list is no stranger to creeping up and ruining the party. The list recently snatched DH Giancarlo Stanton, and RP Abreu, to go along with the group of quality pitchers and the OTHER DH (Matt Carpenter) that was already sitting there. They went 0-3 against the Toronto Blue Jays, 1-2 against the Tampa Bay Rays, and sadly 1-3 against the Boston Red Sox.

New York Mets vs New York Yankees Prediction
Our Prediction for Monday, August 22nd is…. Mets 7 - Yankees 2
The Mets have such a steep pitching advantage… and the Yankees have been on such a cold streak in August that this would seem a predetermined win for the Mets. Still be wary of how hard you push… The Yankees are still the Yankees. The recommendation is for the Mets on the moneyline.

Players to Watch
Mets: RHP Max Sherzer, 9-2, 2.15 ERA, 134 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched, 0.93 WHIP. His nickname is “brown eye”... although some have called him “psycho”. Strong arm and a pretty incredible career behind him… Sherzer is 38 and keeps on trucking. His numbers this season are simply better than his career average.
Yankees: RHP Domingo German, 1-2, 4.45 ERA, 23 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched. 1.41 ERA. Domingo is a relatively green 30 year old with mild to mediocre numbers this season. It seems like the Yankees did not want to burn anyone good in a head to head matchup with Sherzer. By starting German the Yanks are signaling a bullpen game.
Starting Lineups
Mets: CF Brandon Nimmo, RF Starling Marte, SS Francisco Lindor, DH Pete Alonso, 1B Darin Ruf, 2B Jeff McNeil, LF Mark Canha, 3B Brett Baty, C James McCann
Yankees: DH DJ LeMahieu, LF Andrew Benintendi, RF Aaron Judge, 1B Anthony Rizzo, 2B Gleyber Torres, 3B Oswaldo Cabrera, C Jose Trevino, SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa, CF Estevan Florial
Managers
Mets: Buck “a man of many stops in the show” Showalter
Yankees: Aaron “I played as recently as 2009” Boone
Weather Forecast
A rainy Monday in New York City. Humidity 80% and the chance of precipitation is 90%. That is a pretty large chance. Will we get delays?... Will we get postponements? It will still be 78* so maybe the rain is not an all day thing… but then again… the forecast says it will be. That ruins the start of a great matchup for ticket holding fans. It also bolsters my long held belief that every stadium everywhere gets a retractable roof… Play on should be way more important than anything the weather has to say.
