Los Angeles Angels vs Chicago White Sox Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Angels are 4-6 over their last ten games.  Logging 3 Overs and 7 Unders. They went 0-1 against the New York Yankees, 2-2 against the Texas Rangers, 1-1 against the San Diego Padres, 1-2 against the Houston Astros.  They are frustrating underdogs.  It makes no sense to split with the Rangers.  That has to be one of the opponents you dominate in a 4 game stand.  The potential biggest star in major league baseball since Babe Ruth is wasting away on this perennial underachieving squad.

The White Sox are 5-5 over their last ten games.  Notching 3 Overs, 6 Unders and 1 Push.  They went 1-0 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-2 against the Kansas City Royals, 1-2 against the Oakland Athletics, 2-1 against the Boston Red Sox.  They are firmly in first place in the AL Central but have noticeably cooled in September.  Since opening day they have been the only real quality team in the American League Central, but someone should tell them now is the time to turn it on and be at top form when the postseason comes.  This isn’t June, no more coasting.

Offensive Analysis

The LA Angels offense is 9th in batting average .247, 16th in runs scored 640, 18th in home runs 173.  They have the league leader in home runs in Shohei Ohtani and the rest of the lineup can only manage to get them to 18th?  We don’t expect them to have Los Angeles Dodgers production at the plate… but they need more bats to pair with Shohei.

The White Sox are 5th in batting average .254, 6th in runs scored 708, 19th in home runs 169.

Defensive Analysis

The fans in Los Angeles love Shohei Ohtani on the mound… but the Angels have a team ERA 4.71 for 23rd, 10th in strikeouts 1307, 24th in WHIP 1.38.  They have given up 523 walks for 5th worst in the league.

The White Sox are 8th in team ERA 3.78, 3rd in strikeouts 1414, 5th in WHIP 1.20.  Lucas Giolito leads the team in ERA and is 25th in the league in that stat, Dylan Cease is 34th.  Lance Lynn leads them in wins.  They have multiple guys in the starting rotation that can take the mound and get wins.

MLB Betting Trends

Chicago was the moneyline favorite in seven of its last 10 games, and finished 4-3.
Los Angeles has played as the underdog in six of its past 10 games and has gone 2-4.
LA Angels are 3-8 SU in their last 11 games on the road.                                                      Chi White Sox are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games at home.

Key Injuries

Angels:  Jo Adell  CF  Day to Day,  Alex Cobb SP  Out,  Mike Trout CF  Out for season.
White Sox:  Tim Anderson SS  10-Day IL, Andrew Vaughn 1B  Day to day.

Players to Watch

Angels:  Shohei Ohtani!  If you watch an Angels game, the reason is to see Shohei Ohtani play. Especially since Mike Trout has been out and will miss the rest of the season entirely.

White Sox:  Jose Abreu.  A power hitting first baseman who has had more than 100 RBIs in 6 of his 8 season in the majors.  Also you can’t count 2020 because the shortened season allowed him only 60 which would have been on pace in a regular season.

Notable Quotes

"I really liked it. Just a high pitch number. A lot of full counts, big counts. This is a team where if you want to pitch deep into a game against them, they're not going to expand a whole lot. You have to get them out in the zone. But he had his velocity at the end, and I liked how he battled through it. I still think there's a growth moment in there." - Angels
manager Joe Maddon.  Heaping praise on Jaime Barria, the minor league call up who is shooting for a spot in 2022.

“He’s a regular player who plays all around,...If you look at the at-bats, if he stays healthy, this guy would get as many at-bats as a regular. ...he’ll play all over. He’s not a utility player. He’s just a really good everyday versatile player.”  -Tony LaRussa.  Heaping praise on White Sox utility player Leury Garcia after his walk off home run last game.
