Colorado Rockies vs Texas Rangers Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Rockies are 6-4 over their last ten games. They beat the San Diego Padres 2-0, went 2-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-2 against the Chicago Cubs, 1-1 against the Dodgers.  It's hard to know what defines the Rockies.  They are dominant at home and atrocious on the road. They have a great team batting average but are 11 games below .500, and 25 games OUT OF FIRST in the NL West.  Could the Air in Denver really give this team a home field advantage and a road trip hangover?

The Rangers are 2-8 over their last ten games.  0-2 against the Seattle Mariners, 1-2 against the Boston Red Sox, 1-2 against the Cleveland Indians, 0-2 against the Houston Astros.  The Rangers have made a strong case for MLB’s worst team. It's a tight race with the Orioles and Diamondbacks looming and six weeks to go...  They are not just a bad Texas Team this season, but are on a multi year stretch of bad.  Not just bad in June or bad in April.  They aren’t even reliable for the occasional underdog bet.

Offensive Analysis

The Rockies are 7th (tied with the Los Angeles Angels) in team batting average .249, 14th in runs scored 591, and 22nd in home runs 143.

The Rangers are 29th in batting average .229,  28th in runs scored 497, and 25th in home runs 140.  They are one of the worst offenses in every statistic.

Defensive Analysis

The Rockies pitchers 23rd in ERA 4.73, 25th in strikeouts 1037, 23rd in WHIP 1.37.
The Rangers pitchers are 24th in ERA 4.74, 29th in strikeouts 1002, 20th in WHIP 1.35.  Both teams have terrible pitching staffs with soft starting rotations that give way to softer bullpens.

Rockies Vs Rangers Prediction

People tune in to this game with the opposite feeling of why they would tune into the San Francisco Giants vs the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger stadium.  Noone is looking for (nor will they get) fireworks out of a Rockies Rangers matchup.  Neither team will move up in the standings because of anything that happens… The reason fans watch a game like this is prop bets, habit and hope for next season.

The Rockies will start righty German Marquez.  11-9, 4.02 ERA, 154 strikeouts in 150 innings of work, 1.19 Whip.  German is a solid vet with lots of career starts under his belt having debuted in 2016.  He is a big part of the upcoming Rockies prediction.

The Rangers will debut AJ Alexy, a 23 year old call up who is 0-0 with 0.00 ERA, 0 SO, 0 BB… you get it!  He’s a complete unknown commodity at the pro level.  A first timer that brings nothing with him but a silly beard and pleasant grin.  The 6’4 195 pounder is 13-19 in the minors with a 3.30 ERA, which in itself is a completely unreliable set of stats since it covers multiple minor league assignments.  I’m hoping AJ has a long and productive MLB career… Monday night he will get rocked. He’ll hand out a lot of earned runs.

The Rockies vs Rangers prediction is  Rockies 9 - Rangers 2

MLB Betting Trends

The Rockies are 59-70 on the moneyline, but only 16-48 on the moneyline in road games.  This is a road game for the Rockies.
The Rockies O/U is 56-69-3 on the season with 28-34-1 coming ini road games.
The Rangers are 44-85 on the moneyline this season,  28-36 at home… which is much better than the 16-49 on the road.  They are still a losing team but less so at home.
The Rangers O/U is 63-58-7 (that’s a lot of pushes) 27-33-4 at home.  This is a Ranger home game.

Key Injuries

Rockies:  Jon Gray SP Day to Day;  Raimel Tapia LF 10 Day IL
Rangers: Andy Albanez 3B Day to Day; Eli White SS 10 day IL

Players to Watch

CJ Cron for the Rockies.  He hit a mammoth tie breaking home run against the Dodgers to get the Rockies a win Friday night.  Imagine how far he can hit it off a rookie debut pitcher for a last place team?!
Adolis Garcia for the Rangers.  A rookie in the starting lineup this season.  The Rangers may be in last place, but Adolis has 28 home runs on the season.  He is a keeper and may find himself the star of a much needed rebuild.

Notable Quotes

"We're out here looking to ruin some people's seasons," -Rockies starter Kyle Freeland after getting a 4-2 win against the Dodgers.  There is literally nothing the Rockies can do to “ruin” the Rangers season.

"His ball is moving all over the place. ... His stuff is nasty,....His ball is moving, and it's not consistent. His sinker sometimes runs, sometimes it goes straight down, sometimes it stays straight. It's really hard to square up."  -Rangers manager Chris Woodward talking about Astros pitcher Valdez… I wonder if everyone has tuned him out as easily as I just did?
