White Sox vs Rangers Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The White Sox are 5-5 over their last ten games.  Logging 3 Overs, 6 Unders and 1 Push. They went 1-2 against the Oakland Athletics, 2-1 against the Boston Red Sox, 1-2 against the Los Angeles Angels, and 1-0 in the first game of this series against the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers are 5-5 over their last ten games.  Notching 5 Overs, 3 Unders and 2 Push.  They went 2-0 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-1 against the Oakland Athletics, 1-3 against the Houston Astros, and 0-1 in the series opener of a three-game series with the White Sox.

Offensive Analysis

The White Sox are 5th in team batting avg .256, 7th in runs scored 730, 19th in home runs 172,.  They are close to the top in nearly everything.  A little anemic in home runs when compared to the league’s big boys, but they are winners and will see some postseason action.

The Rangers are 29th in team batting average .231, 29th in runs scored 570, 26th in home runs 155.  They couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat.

Defensive Analysis

The Chicago White Sox pitchers are 6th in team ERA 3.78, 3rd in strikeouts 1459, 6th in WHIP 1.20.  They don’t allow a lot of walks, and they definitely don’t allow a lot of hits.  It’s a formula for taking down a lot of opponents.  This three-game set was designed perfectly to Chicago’s strengths for a sweep.

The moneyline underdogs Texas Rangers are 25th in team ERA 4.79, 28th in strikeouts 1128, 21st in WHIP 1.35.  They will be putting young, new guys on the first pitch and in the relief appearances.  These numbers can go lower before the season is done.

MLB Betting Trends

The White Sox score .3 runs less per game on the road.
The Rangers have won 46 of the 128 games they’ve been the underdog.
The Rangers score .2 runs better in home games than road games.

Key Injuries

White Sox:  Evan Marshall RP (elbow) Out for Season * Adam Engel LF (shoulder) 10 Day IL
Rangers:  Ronald Guzman 1B (knee)  Out for season *  Sherten Apostel 3B Day to Day

Players to Watch

Pitchers:

The White Sox will start Lucas Giolito RHP 9-9, 3.77 ERA, 188 SO in 162.1 IP, 1.11 WHIP. The 27 year old Giolito gave up 3 hits and 3 ER in his last start against LAA.  The Texas Rangers are the perfect team to get his confidence back with.  He also leads the team in ERA so he doesn’t need a lot of confidence.

The Rangers will start right-hander Jordan Lyles 9-11, 5.20 ERA, 131 SO in 162 IP, 1.40 WHIP.  Jordan was called up in April of 2011 to make his Major League debut.  He is 53-77 in his career 1130 innings of work.  The 30 year old has rarely dipped below a 5.00 ERA.  This year he has given up 36 HR… his most in a season by far.

Notable Quotes

"It was a completely well-played game,....It was a pleasure to watch.”  White Sox manager Tony LaRussa about Friday’s game.  The W Sox beat the Rangers 8-0.

"I think they actually waited out Taylor,.....Some of those guys that are typical free-swingers, they actually boxed him up pretty well." -Texas manager Chris Woodward took something positive from being beat 8-0.
