Giants: 57-57, 3rd place NL West (but 22.5 games back)

Game 2 is on the way.  These teams still have game 1 to play for tonight… but this prediction is for Wednesday and game 2.

A National League West matchup between a perennial nobody and a recent nobody.  The Arizona Diamondbacks feel like they have never been good… even though it was something like 20 years ago. The Giants were simply GREAT last season. Winning the NL West and betsing the Dodgers by 1 game as both teams surged past 100 wins.  The Dodgers would win in the playoffs over the Giants… and that is when the Giants collapsed.  In the offseason the Giants lost a few pitchers and a couple of hitters… They did not reshuffle the deck… and the result (plus some injury) is a terrible team,.  The Giants were known for their amazing teamwork and next guy up attitude in the 107 win season.. Now they have none of that.  Bradon belt is not as effective… Crawford is not as effective… and Chris Bassitt is long gone.  The Giants are still there but their heart has died.  Let’s look at the numbers and win a bet.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have won 6 of their last 10 games,  This is a feat for a bad pitching team that also is not good at batting (as far as MLB numbers are concerned).  They went 1-1 against the Colorado Rockies, 3-1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1 against the Colorado Rockies, and 0-1 against the Cleveland Guardians during that stretch.  The Diamondbacks have some talent… they always do… but the sum of the parts is not very impressive.  They make a promise to other teams that occasionally they will simply not have an actual pitcher on the mound.

The San Francisco Giants have won 5 of their last 10 games,  It doesn’t help them move up or down. It is just baseball.  They went 2-0 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-2 against the San Diego Padres, 2-0 against the Oakland A’s, and 0-3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The Giants are not secure in any matchup.  They have some holdover talent from last season, but have really fallen off.  They are a coinflip from beating or losing to anyone… Their numbers say as much.  You want to shake them and remind them of what they are capable of… but they aren’t capable of that this season.
