Season Record

D-Backs: 55-66, 4th place NL West
Royals: 50-74, 4th place AL Central

An inter-conference matchup between the 4th place AL Central team… and the 4th place NL West team.  These are not good teams.  They are however an indictment!  We finally get to see which bad team is a bad team because of the strength of their division.  It also poses as a Great Betting Opportunity.  When bad teams play… believe the bad numbers they bring into the contest.  And put a lot of attention to the pitching matchup.  Bad teams are like cheap wine… some of it tastes good when put up against other cheap wines which taste terrible.  The Al Central and the woeful Kansas City Royals may be a bad team in the easiest division in baseball!  The Nl West and the woeful Arizona Diamondbacks may be a bad team in the hardest division in baseball.  Purists will tell you that year in and year out the hardest division in baseball is the AL East with the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Blue Jays… etc… They are wrong.  The Nl West has produced the most 100+ win teams… and the most World Series contenders over the last 5 seasons.  The NL West is where talent lives and breathes.  So, the numbers may be part of the upside down world… There is a chance the Diamondbacks could contend if they played in the AL Central.  If the Diamondbacks could stop worrying about the Dodgers, the Padres, and the Giants… they might be a hard out in the playoffs… not likely, but might.

The D-Backs have won only 4 of their last 10 games.  They are bottom rung in pitching and hitting.  Those are hard realities to overcome.  Of course their numbers come from losses to the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants… among others.  They went 0-3 versus the St Louis Cardinals (who are experiencing an Albert Pujols retirement revolution… .277 batting average and 14 home runs in his short time with the team… The guy is only 7 HR away from 700) , They went 2-2 against the San Francisco Giants, and 2-1 against the Colorado Rockies.  They had been playing well until the Cardinals whooped up on them.

The Kansas City Royals have won only 3 of their last 10 games.  They are also bottom rung in hitting and pitching.  It’s sad how empty this franchise is of talent both now and in the pipeline for the future.  They went 1-0 against the Chiocago White Sox, 1-3 against the Tampa Bay Rays, 0-3 against the Minnesota Twins, and 1-1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers… during that stretch.  The hard to believe part of the stretch is that the Royals were able to put together a couple games that beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Proof positive that you can’t simply be a chalk eater when betting baseball… Bad teams are loaded with professional ball players… They can beat anybody… especially when that anybody tries out young pitchers against you.

Players to Watch

D-Backs: RHP Zach Gallen, 9-2, 2.78 ERA, 132 strikeouts in 132 innings pitched.  0.96 WHIP.  This 27 year old is the best the D-backs have to offer.  He is good and will make a great Padres, Met, or Yankee in the future.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer, 6-4, 3.27 ERA, 114 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched. 1.15 WHIP.  The 26 year old has good stuff and little major league experience as a starter.  Good luck kid… you will make a fine Met, Yankee, or Padre one day.
