Mississippi State - Ole Miss preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Mississippi State: won 56-7 vs. East Tennessee State
Ole Miss: lost 42-27 at Arkansas

The egg bowl is back and for all intents and purposes, I can't think of a worse time for it to have lost its luster than with what happened over the weekend. The Mississippi State Bulldogs were expected to be a middle of the pack SEC team and I don't think that comes as much of a surprise. What does come as a surprise is that the Ole Miss Rebels completely laid an egg last week and lost a very good chance of having a very high-profile bowl game this winter.

Nevertheless, the two teams will face off this Friday in Oxford for bragging rights galore, and it just so happens that this game is the only one on TV on Friday. So after you get your fill of Thanksgiving football on Thursday, you get to enjoy the ramifications of being in Mississippi on Friday night so that's good news.

The rebels, and I am putting this as lightly as I possibly can, absolutely choked on Saturday in the worst possible way. And I get it they weren't the only team to have choked in a big way on Saturday in that conference. But to fall behind 35-6 at halftime to Arkansas is probably the biggest shock we have seen this weekend. And I would indeed put that up against Tennessee getting lamb basted in South Carolina.

And I don't really understand how this team could possibly just score only 27 points when you have a beast of a running back carrying the football and your quarterback was actually playing very decently. But there's no denying that the defense completely gave up in this one. They had no answer for KJ Jefferson, they certainly had no answer for Raheim Sanders, and by the time Ole Miss’ offense decided to put up a whopping 703 total yards of offense the game was already over.

Quarterback Jackson dart through for 240 yards and a touchdown, Quinshon Judkins did his usual thing of running for 214 yards and a touchdown, but the defense just died and that is the story of that game.

If the defense dies against Mississippi State, the Bulldogs are going to run all over the rebels in convincing fashion on Friday. Mississippi State got the easy tune up over the weekend in a 56-7 victory over East Tennessee State. if you didn't know East Tennessee State was a school then congratulations you've learned something new.

Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers had another terrific game throwing the football throwing for 301 yards and five touchdowns, and that's really been the story of the year from Mississippi State. If the quarterback is on, he tends to be very on and throws the ball very well. When not it's a completely disappointing situation.

Prediction

I sincerely hope that when the new polls come out this week that we finally see how fraudulent Ole Miss has been just because they've now lost three of four and they still find themselves ranked in the top 15. I don't know if their defense is good enough to withstand a high-octane attack, but they better get it together soon. The egg bowl always tends to be an exciting matchup and it always tends to be close whenever the teams are evenly matched and I think this is one of those times. I think the rebels get the job done but it's going to be a very close game. Ole Miss by 3
