Brewers - Cardinals preview and analysis

I think I have come to accept the fact that Paul Goldschmidt will never go hitless again in his life. It might as well be written into law. I spent the first month of this season thinking Nolan Arenado was the MVP of the St. Louis Cardinals. Turns out we just needed to wait for Goldschmidt to get out of his slump before he felt like he wanted to destroy baseballs.

Goldschmidt hit a homer and had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 19 games, and the Cardinals won 8-3 to take two of three against the Milwaukee Brewers heading into the series finale on Sunday between the top two teams in the NL Central.

In reality, I should be discussing the young guys that made an impact for the Cardinals on this day, with Nolan Gorman hitting his first major league homer, and Matthew Liberatore throwing five scoreless innings while striking out six.

"I mean, you know, this team makes it special to by taking us in the shower and dousing us with everything," Gorman said. "So, it was fun today."

"It looked like the game was slow to him, which was good to see the first time at home," manager Oliver Marmol said. "Good crowd, didn't make the moment any bigger than it was."

And yes, when two young players are contributing like that for a team that has World Series aspirations, that should be celebrated. But what Goldschmidt is doing right now in a time where the offense is not getting a lot of love around the league, it's insane. His on-base streak is now 33 games and he hit a homer for the third straight game.

Goldschmidt's average is now up to .355 and has the team lead in homer with 10 and 40 RBI this season. His OPS of 1.042 is fifth best in the major leagues, and his play has been a reason why the Cardinals have been able to keep this momentum going.

The Brewers, meanwhile, had a rough outing, particularly starting pitcher Adrian Houser lasting only four innings and giving up nine hits and five runs while only striking out one. His day was just a rough one giving up a near-450-foot blast to Gorman, but to not pitch as well as the rookie was a problem.

“I just wasn’t able to hit a lot of spots,” Houser said. “I didn’t really have good command today and they put some good swings on mistakes I made and that’s what they’re supposed to do.”

The eight runs were a career-high given up for Houser, one of the pitchers tasked with needing quality starts while the health of Brandon Woodruff is further evaluated.

“I thought he just left some fastballs in the middle of the plate, really,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “I thought his off-speed stuff was pretty good, he just kind of missed on some fastballs and they made him pay for it.”

Prediction

We're getting treated to one hell of a pitching matchup Sunday with Corbin Burnes taking on Miles Mikolas. The reigning Cy Young winner has gotten off to another great start, but so has Mikolas. With the way the bats are clicking for the Cardinals, I like the way they've taken hold of this series at the plate. Burnes is the last chance for Goldschmidt to cool down. I'm not sure that can happen. Cardinals win 7-4
