Miami (OH) - Eastern Michigan preview and analysis

Recent form
Miami (OH): won 28-17 vs. Central Michigan on Oct. 2
Eastern Michigan: lost 27-20 at Northern Illinois on Oct. 2

The Eastern Michigan Eagles were within reach of a 4-1 start last Saturday, but the comeback was too little too late in a 7-point loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies.

Now they return home to take on the Miami (OH) Redhawks in what's going to be a troubling time for EMU. Back-to-back MAC losses are very much within reach.

It doesn't make much sense how the Eagles found themselves on the losing ledger Saturday n DeKalb, Illinois. NIU quarterback Rocky Lombardi was only 9 of 20 for 84 yards, the Huskies offense was held to 326 total yards, and Eastern Michigan quarterback Ben Bryant was very solid (338 yards, 2 TD).

But the Huskies dominated time of possession and also forced two turnovers to hand EMU its first loss in three weeks. Eastern Michigan had multiple-score wins over Texas State and UMass that followed a rough 27-point loss at the Wisconsin Badgers.

A gritty Miami team comes to Ypsilanti off a 28-17 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas in the MAC opener for MU. After a rather rough go through three quarters, Redhawks quarterback A.J. Mayer threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a small rally.

Mayer replaced starting quarterback Brett Gabbert (yes, the brother to Blaine) after he sustained an injury in the second quarter. Mayer threw an interception, but the quarterbacks combined for 350 yards and four touchdowns to propel an offense that totaled for 514 yards and dominated in time of possession by almost seven minutes. Safe to say defense wasn’t available for Central Michigan

This is going to be an even matchup featuring two solid passing attacks. Miami has to feel good knowing that it can go to whomever in the quarterback game to lead to victory. On the road, I feel more comfortable in the Redhawks when the game comes down to the final drive than Eastern Michigan. Miami (OH) by 3

Betting trends

Miami is 10-3 against the spread against conference opponents in its last 13, and also 10-3 straight up.

Eastern Michigan is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games.

Players to watch

Miami (OH): Depending on who starts at quarterback come opening kickoff, Brent Gabbert may be someone the Redhawks can rely on to get them to a bowl game. Gabbert threw for 171 yards on 12 of 20 passing and threw two touchdowns before leaving the game due to injury.

Eastern Michigan: Wide receiver Hassan Beydoun did everything right last week but find the end zone. EMU’s top receiver had a team-best 14 receptions for 167 yards, nearly doubling his season output for the entire season. Head coach Chris Creighton has a tall task for trying to get his offense going at that efficiency.
