Marlins - Phillies preview and analysis

The Miami Marlins were not going to let another one get away from them against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. After wasting a stellar performance from their ace, Miami bounced back in a huge way with a 11-9 victory over the Phillies in the second game of their series at Citizens Bank park.

The series continues on Wednesday in Philadelphia, but it is a big moment for the Marlins who have shown once again, that they are much more in tune with how good of a team they are this year. Look, I get it, being four games under 500 is not something to get excited about.

"That was pretty wild, kind of a whirlwind," Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings said. "Thinking you're going to win for sure, then probably going to lose. We just did a great job of battling back. We did just enough."

But what we can say about Miami at this point is that they are a resilient bunch that will continue to find ways to win games, or at the very least give their opponents fits. And that's exactly what happened in this game on Tuesday. The Marlins got off to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with home runs from Jesus Aguilar and Avisail Garcia, both two-run shots.

But that lead did not last long with Philadelphia responding with eight runs over the next 3 innings. And at the forefront of that comeback, and what would eventually be giving the Phillies the lead in the eighth inning, was the play of Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins hit a three run home run in the fourth to tie the game and then followed it with a two run double in the 5th inning to give him five rbi's in such a short amount of time.

And when it was time to deliver a big hit, after Jazz Chisholm tied the game for Miami in the top of the seventh with a solo home run, Hoskins delivered with a solo shot of his own to give Philadelphia the lead.

Going into the 9th, the Marlins had enough of the tomfoolery. Garrett Cooper tide the game in the top of the ninth with an RBI single, and then Aguilar drove in the remaining two runs with a double to put the game out of reach.

"It's disappointing," Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson said. "The offense really battled to take the lead. And soon after that we gave it back."

"That ended up being huge," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of Realmuto's error. "They've had a little trouble, I guess, finishing games and things like that. It seemed like it kind of unraveled a little bit and our guys stayed patient in the zone and got what we wanted."

Safe to say this has been a very entertaining series to this point and even though Miami has already won the season series over Philadelphia and shocking manner, what this series has shown us with 100 games to go in the regular season is that the National League east is a much more formidable division from the middle of the pack outside of the New York Mets.

Because I think we can all agree that the Mets are far and away the best team in this division. The Atlanta Braves now on a 13 game winning streak are slowly reminding people that they are the World Series champs for a reason. But then you get to 3rd and 4th place in this division and you realize how interesting it really can become should things continue to progress as the season rolls on.

Ultimately I do think the Mets win the division but there is some competition now, and the race is a little bit tighter and much more competitive then it was earlier in the year and I think that's something baseball fans can be very excited about.

Prediction

The Marlins have yet to name a starter for this finale in Philadelphia, but the Phillies will be sending Kyle Gibson to the mound. If I had to venture a guest from Miami, I think they can take full solace in knowing what they did on Tuesday and turn it into something very competitive for their own and I believe that will be more than enough for the Marlins to come away with his shocking series victory over the red hot Phillies. Marlins win 6-4
