Maryland Terrapins Analysis

Maryland is coming into this game with a 4-1 record overall and they are 1-0 in their road games this season where they will be in this game. This will be their 3rd conference matchup of the year and they have already stumbled a bit with a 1-1 record in conference games this season. Their season started off great with 4 straight wins against the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Howard Bison, the Illinois Fighting Illini, and the Kent State Golden Flashes but they recently hit a snag in their last game when they lost to Iowa. Maryland got destroyed by the Hawkeyes by almost 40 points. Taulia Tagovailoa really struggled in that game as he completed 16/29 passes for 157 yards, 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Reece Udinski eventually got his chance at the quarterback position but he completed just 5/8 passes for 17 yards and 1 interceptions for a total of 6 INTs between the two quarterbacks. Tagovailoa also led the team in rushing with 24 yards on 4 carries in that game but they had absolutely no ground game there at all. Dontay Demus led the receivers with 61 yards on 4 receptions in what was a very quiet day for the receiving corps. Ami Finau and Ruben Hyppolite II both led the defense with 5 solo tackles each in that game. Sam Okuayinonu and Mosiah Nasili-Kite both had 1 sack each in that one but no one on the defense came away with an interception. They have scored 163 points in their first 5 games and they have allowed their opponents to score 108 points against them. Their offense is averaging 469.6 YPG while their defense is allowing 338.4 YPG.

Ohio State Buckeyes Analysis

OSU is coming into this college football game with a 4-1 record overall and they are 2-1 in their home games this season where they will be in this one. This will be their 3rd conference matchup on their schedule and they are already off to a great start with a 2-0 record in their conference games this season. Their 1 loss came against the Oregon Ducks while their 4 wins came against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, the Akron Zips, and against Rutgers in their last game. They finally looked like the old Ohio State again in their last one as they completely dismantled Rutgers by almost 40 points. CJ Stroud played a great game as he completed 17/23 passes for 330 yards and 5 touchdowns. TreVeyon Henderson led the team in rushing with 71 yards and 1 touchdown on 8 carries while Marcus Crowley also had 58 yards rushing on 7 carries. Master Teague actually led the team in carries with 11 for 52 yards. Chris Olave had a massive day as he led the team in receiving with 119 yards and 2 touchdowns on 5 receptions while Garrett Wilson was right behind him with 71 yards receiving and 1 TD on 3 receptions. Ronnie Hickman led the defense with 7 solo tackles and 5 assisted ones. Tyleik Williams recorded the only sack in that game for the defense but they did not need to get to the quarterback much as Tommy Eichenberg, Ryan Watts, and Denzel Burke all had 1 interception each in that one. They have scored 225 points in their first 5 games and they have allowed their opponents to score 106 points against them. Their offense is averaging 555.6 YPG while their defense is allowing 397.8 YPG.

Maryland vs Ohio State Prediction

OSU is coming into this game as a 20 point favorite with the current betting odds. Maryland is coming off of a game where they lost to Iowa, another conference team and a ranked one, by almost 40 points. This was not the first indicator of their cracks either as Maryland struggled to beat a weak Illinois team in another conference game earlier this year. Ohio State is also a conference team and a ranked one, just like Iowa. Ohio State is also coming off of a game where they beat another conference team on the road by almost 40 points. Now they get a non-ranked conference team, just like Rutgers, and they will be at home this time. This game feels eerily similar to last week and if that is the case then the script is already written either way. Ohio State is starting to look like their former selves again so the only bet to make in this game is on OSU to cover the spread here.

Players to Watch

Maryland Terrapins: Tayon Fleet-Davis is one player to watch here. He leads his team in rushing yards and in touchdowns scored this year. This whole offense was quiet last week as they did not have a good game and now they have another tough challenge here. He is one of their best pieces on the offense and he will need to have a good game if they are to win here so look for him to get the ball in his hands more in this one.

Ohio State Buckeyes: Chris Olave is one player to watch in this one. He is coming off of a big game where he had over 100 yards receiving. He will want to carry over that momentum into this game now that his team is rolling again so look for him to make some big catches down the field in this game.

Notable Quotes

"Just undisciplined football. The turnovers, beating ourselves. ... That doesn't help the defense at all. That's really what it comes down to — turnovers, penalties, beating yourself." - Chigoziem Okonkwo on their loss to Iowa in their last game.

"Having a win like this after the last month, it's given us a little bit of juice now as we head into the next month of October. It was some tough times here, but we grew through it, we didn't panic, and in that we might have a good team as we head into October, November." - Head coach Ryan Day after their blowout win on the road against Rutgers in their last game.
