Maryland - NC State  preview, analysis and prediction

Maryland analysis

I’m probably one of the only few in the world that fully believes in the Maryland Terrapins more than I should. Do I think they’re the best 7-5 team of all-time? No one would realistically say that, but for some reason I go into every season thinking that this team could be the sleeper in the Big Ten if a few bounces go their way. But then they end up being in the middle of the pack because of level of competition. But Maryland is in a bowl game and you have to like where they are going into this one. The Terrapins snapped a three-game losing streak in their season finale against Rutgers with a 37-0 thrashing as 14.5-point favorites. That’s at least what you get when you have an offense that’s capable of putting up 30 points with ease. And that’s what you get with quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa dominating in the fashion of 342 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Scarlet Knights. Maryland goes as far as its star quarterback can take them. He might not yet be on the same path as his brother, but he’s very much capable of winning games and putting up big numbers (even though he was held to less than 100 twice against Wisconsin and Penn State). You can look at the 293 yards and two touchdowns in the near-upset of Ohio State on Nov. 19. He’s capable of dominating when needed, and he could likely do it against a weak opponent like NC State.

NC State analysis

The good vibes surrounding the North Carolina State Wolfpack are long gone. The minute they lost quarterback Devin Leary to a season-ending pectoral injury, everything just went to hell and a handbasket. There was just no consistency as it pertains to finding that offensive groove. Losing to Clemson and Syracue was one thing. But then losing back-to-back games to Boston College and Louisville really threw this team through a loop. And it’s not like NC State can be trusted against the spread, either. The Wolfpack failed to cover in seven of their last nine despite getting points in four of those games. But NC State did finish strong with a 30-27 overtime win against North Carolina in which NC State was 6.5-point underdogs in that one. Quarterback Ben Finley played the game of his life by throwing for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Trying to do that again is another unlikely situation that makes no sense, but hey, do what you can.

Prediction

This is going to be another quarterback situation in which Maryland has the edge. The Terps are 6-1 ATS in their last seven non-conference games while the over has cashed in five of their last six bowl games. This is the perfect situation for the Terps to get rolling. Maryland 37, NC State 21
