Marquette - Georgetown preview, prediction and analysis
Recent form
Marquette: lost 87-72 at UConn
Georgetown: lost 74-62 at Providence
The Marquette Golden Eagles will try to bounce back after a deflating loss earlier in the week when they take on the last-place Georgetown Hoyas in Capital One Arena on Saturday.
The 10th-ranked Eagles had one of their worst games of the season, losing 87-72 against the struggling-yet-ranked UConn Huskies 87-72 on Feb. 7. After a winning streak that pushed them near the top of the conference, Marquette was outscored 46-29 in the first half. Tyler Kolek had 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting, and Stevie Mitchell and Ben Gold each had 12 points.
But that was all that could be done. UConn has struggled plenty this year but has remained competitive enough to make things interesting. But this one was a dud of a loss for the Golden Eagles, who worked hard to get to the top 10 and now will likely find themselves out of it, win or lose on Saturday. Hopefully win given how bad Georgetown is.
“The rankings mean nothing,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “It's amazing the disparity — no disrespect to anyone here — between what the ranking means to media and fans in the middle of a season and what it means to players and coaches. It just doesn't mean anything.”
Outside of the Big `12, no other conference is holding such intrigue at the top of the standings than the Big East. Marquette's 11-3 mark is good for first place at the moment after Xavier lost to Butler on Friday. But it surely creates some intrigue for how the rest of this will unfold.
All signs should point to Marquette getting back on track. Because they're facing Georgetown. And Georgetown, if you've watched them at any point, you know things have been bad all year. They are flat-out bad, hence the 1-13 record. But if you talk to Providence after winning only by 12, they're a tough, team apparently.
Prime Spears had 18 points, and Brandon Murray finished with 16 points for the Hoyas, who shot just 40 percent from the floor and only 3 of 15 from 3-point range.
“They’re probably one of the most physical teams we have in our conference,” Hoyas coach Patrick Ewing said. “Ed has done an outstanding job of getting them to buy in to the way that he wants to play. They have some older guys who have been around and they play together.”
God bless Patrick Ewing for even wanting anything to do with his alma mater right now. Watching the Hoyas is about as giant of an eyesore as one could possibly imagine. And quite honestly, there's no point in them trying to even play anymore games for the rest of the year. Do you really think anyone wants to watch them do anything? That's just my guess for a 1-13 team in conference play. But you always want to cheer for programs like that to win the conference title for just pure stupidity, so let us all get to that point if we can.
Prediction
There's nothing else more to this game. It's about to be one hell of a problem for Georgetown trying to withstand a tough Marquette team. Buckle up for one ugly of a time. Marquette 79, Georgetown 60
