Kings - Hurricanes preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Kings: lost 5-2 at Lightning
Hurricanes: won 4-1 vs. Bruins

The Los Angeles Kings will be playing the Caroline Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 31 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Los Angeles Kings lost against the Tampa Bay Lightning last Saturday, January 28 at Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Florida with a score of 5-2. The Lost Angeles Kings currently rank 2nd in the Pacific Division.

Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Phillip Danault scored for the Kings (28-18-6), who had won their previous three, including a 4-3 victory against the Florida Panthers on Friday. Jonathan Quick made 20 saves.

"We made three or four mistakes [in the first period] and they ended up in our net," Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. "That happens often in a game, it's just that these guys capitalized on it."

Anderson-Dolan cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 2-1 at 10:12 when his shot from the left face-off circle trickled through Vasilevskiy's pads.

"That was the moment where we thought, 'Hey we're back in this'," McLellan said. "Because [Vasilevskiy] normally doesn't give those up. But if you don't shoot it, you have no chance to score anyway. Jaret has been shooting the puck."

Danault brought the King’s closer to the Lightning’s 4-2 at 19:08 when he threw the puck toward the net and it deflected off the stick of Tampa Bay defenseman Ian Cole.

"We gave up a lot of chances," Kings forward Alex Iafallo said. "We felt like we had to take away chances in the middle and we didn't. When you don't communicate it leads to individual [errors]. As a whole we just didn't get it done defensively."

The Los Angeles Kings have won six of their last 10 games.

The Carolina Hurricanes won against the Boston Bruins on Sunday, January 29 at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina with a score of 4-1. The Carolina Hurricanes currently rank 1st in the Metropolitan Division.

The Carolina Hurricanes extended their winning streak to five games. Sebastian Aho, Paul Stastny, Seth Jarvis and Jordan Staal scored, and Frederik Andersen made 24 saves for the Hurricanes (32-9-8), who also extended their point streak to eight games (7-0-1). Brent Burns had an assist in his 1,300th NHL game.

"We know that team is the cream of the crop, and they're lapping everybody right now," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "They played last night, (and) we're trying to catch them. We're at home (with) a good crowd. I think that's probably part of it, too. We deserved that one for sure."

Aho gave Carolina a 1-0 lead at 10:52 of the first period. After stealing the puck from David Pastrnak at the Hurricanes' blue line, Aho skated in on a breakaway and shot low blocker side on Ullmark.

Aho has scored seven goals during a four-game goal streak.

"It's definitely fun to see it up close and see him take it to the next level," Burns said. "He's just explosive when he gets the puck. Anyone can see the confidence growing. He's just a special player."

Stastny made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 12:05 of the second period. He scored with a backhand from near the right post after Martin Necas' shot from the top of the left circle caromed to him off the end boards.

The Hurricanes finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play. The Bruins were 0-for-6.

Jarvis extended the lead to 3-0 at 1:57 of the third period when he stripped the puck from Brandon Carlo in the neutral zone, skated in on a breakaway, and deked Ullmark before lifting in a backhand.

Bruins player Taylor Hall cut it to 3-1 at 3:22 with a deflection of Pavel Zacha's shot, but Staal scored a short-handed empty-net goal at 15:40 for the 4-1 final.

"The pressure down ice was awesome," Andersen said. "They didn't get good opportunities to set up until maybe in the third. That was big."

The Carolina Hurricanes have won seven of their last 10 games.

Prediction

Both teams want to head into the break on a good note. The Hurricanes are riding a high right now. It'd be impossible not to take them. Hurricanes 5, Kings 3
