A National League Matchup between the best in the great NL West and the 2nd best in the garbage NL Central.  I say “garbage” heavily… the NL Central is full of junk… the type of junk that hasn’t produced a 50 win team yet… let alone multiple 50 win teams like the NL East.  The Central is reserved for feasting.  The Dodgers coming out of the NL West have just played the longest home stretch of their season…. And they went 10-1 during.  The Dodgers are killing the game right now… but against the Chicago Cubs for 4 of those games could have made them complacent.  The Cardinals are in 2nd place… but only a few games above .500.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have won 9 of their last 10 games.  They are killing it right now.  They are prolific on offense and 1st in pitching while missing multiple starting level pitchers to the injury list.  The Dodgers have a lineup that will put Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Freddie Freeman 1,2,3… That is amazing!  Those three guys are followed by 3 home run hitters.  Those six guys are followed by Trace Thompson… a part time player that hits well and could start for 25 teams in the league… and is the brother of NBA superstar Klay Thompson.  The Dodgers SWEPT the Chicago Cubs 4-0, they SWEPT the Colorado Rockies 3-0, and went 2-1 against the San Diego Padres during that stretch.  The Dodgers are on fire and have recovered the pace that saw them win 100+ games last season and get to the World Series (which my dad would always call the World Serious).

The St Louis Cardinals have won only 3 of their last 10 games.  They are sinking and sinking fast.  They are on an 8 game streak of UNDERS… if you want to know how stalled the Cardinals offense is. They went 1-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies, 1-3 against the Atlanta Braves, and 1-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Cardinals are an OK team that has nothing left in the tank.  The offense and defense desperately needs all hands on deck to grind out wins… and the injury list is growing.  The Cards have guys like Paul Goldshmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Tommy Edmon… only the Dodgers have all that and so much more.

Dodgers: RHP Mitch White, 1-1, 3.38 ERA, 39 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched, 1.15 WHIP.  The 27 year old has a small amount of numbers to compare both this season and in his career numbers… still  the Whip is ok… the strikeouts per inning is nearly 1 to 1.  He may have a future.

Cardinals: LHP Matthew Liberatore, 2-1, 4.74 ERA, 22 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched.  1.74 WHIP.  This 22 year old is only 24 innings into his MLB career and the Cardinals are willing to let him throw batting practice to the top of the Dodgers lineup before he gets yanked.  They don’t seem to be taking this matchup seriously.  The MLB still pretends that managers don’t call each other to secure pitching matchups beforehand… but this is an odd choice for the Cards.
