Angels - Yankees preview
The New York Yankees will begin an eight-game homestand with a one-off meeting against the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium on Monday.
It begins a crucial stretch for the Yankees in their attempt to make the playoffs. Following the Angels game, the Yankees will host the Boston Red Sox in a three-game series that could have huge implications on the American League wild card race. The series opener will be a doubleheader on Tuesday.
New York enters Monday 5.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the division.
Following that, the Yankees will face the Minnesota Twins in a four-game set.
The Yankees are coming off an entertaining series against the Chicago White Sox that began with Thursday’s game in Dyersville, Iowa in the Field of Dreams game. The White Sox won on a walk-off home run by Tim Anderson in the ninth inning.
New York battled back Saturday as the series shifted back to Guaranteed Rate Field, winning 7-5 in 10 innings by way of Joey Gallo’s two-run home run. The Yankees withstood another Chicago comeback Sunday, winning 5-3 against the leaders of the AL Central.
Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has been the catalyst behind the Bronx Bombers’ bats coming to life as of late. Judge is on a five-game hitting streak entering Sunday with three homers, but a staggering 11 RBI. In the month of August, Judge is batting .327.
The Angels’ trip to New York is the start of a 10-game road trip; the first six an AL Central trip to Detroit and Cleveland, wrapped up with a three-game set at Baltimore.
Los Angeles is coming off a series loss at home to the Houston Astros following an 8-2 blitz on Saturday. Despite the 39th home run of the season for Shohei Ohtani, the other Angels hitters mustered only one run on seven hits. Five Houston pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, led by right-hander Luis Garcia’s five.
The Angels did end the series on a high note with a 3-1 win Sunday. Phil Gosselin had a solo home run for Los Angeles.
The loss put the Angels 12 games back of the Astros for the division lead, but still trail the Red Sox by 9.5 games for the wild card.
Betting trends
The under has been kind to the Angels during their last little bit on the road, going 13-3 in L.A.’s last 16 road contests. Not sure if that’s indicative of the Yankees odds to win or the Angels having a rough go at finding offense away from home, but it’s a gamble, for sure.
It bodes well knowing the under has cashed in the Yankees’ last four games against AL West teams.
Prediction
This game comes down to Suarez and his accuracy. If the Yankees’ bats have really made strides, he’ll need to have the game of his life. His 3.90 ERA is respectable in some circles, but if he can’t get a solid 6 IP, it’ll be a tough hill to climb for L.A. Seeing Judge destroy baseballs lately has been entertaining, and we’d expect him to do this again. Yankees win, under cashes.
