Angels - Tigers preview

The Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers will meet for a three-game series starting Tuesday at Comerica Park in Detroit.

This is the first time the Tigers and Angels have met since a four-game series at Angel Stadium of Anaheim from June 17-20. Los Angeles took three out of four, winning the first three, while the Tigers won the finale 5-3 in 10 innings.

Before the Angels embark on this trek in the Motor City, they played the New York Yankees in a quick one-off matchup at Yankee Stadium on Monday, in which the Yankees won 2-1.

Los Angeles is coming off only their third win in seven games Sunday afternoon, a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros to avoid the sweep.

The Angels continue to deal with an insane ring of bad luck when it comes to injuries. Mike Trout missed his 80th game on Monday and has not been ruled out for the rest of the season, but it almost seems likely. Anthony Rendon has been out since August 4, and likely will be out for the rest of the season unless something drastically changes.

Dylan Bundy will be asked to take the mound for the Halos, who are 12 games back of the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West. The right-hander is 2-9 with a 6.17 ERA. In his last start, Bundy had only four innings of work and allowed three runs.

The Tigers have found a successive string of winning as of late, but to surpass the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central doesn’t seem likely. They’re 11 games out of first place, as well as 11 games out of a wild card spot.

Detroit lost two of three to the Cleveland Indians over the weekend; losing 7-4 on Friday and 11-0 Sunday.

The care is not on the Tigers themselves, but on Miguel Cabrera chasing history. The slugger and former AL MVP is sitting at 499 home runs and could get an optimal opportunity to join the exclusive club.

Casey Mize will be tasked with first pitch duties for the Tigers, who is 6-6 with 3.66 ERA. He hasn’t won since July 29 when throwing 7 IP, allowing only four hits but two strikeouts with zero ER.

Betting trends

The offenses may have a chance to get going in this one. The under has cashed in the Angels’ last five games against AL Central opponents, but the over has gone 3-0-1 in the last four. Which pitching do you trust the most? None really in this matchup.

The Tigers are 17-11 against AL West opponents (+12.2). Detroit is 6-2 against AL West teams when Mize starts. It doesn’t seem like a sexy moneyline pick given the current line,

Prediction

It just doesn’t seem like a game that you should rush to the books. However, signs point to the Tigers getting it done. Here’s to Miggy getting 500. Tigers win 6-3.
