Season Record

Kansas State: 1-4 conf, 9-7 overall (Big 12)
Texas: 3-2 conf, 13-4 overall (Big 12)

A matchup of a Big 12 perennial power and a Big 12 powerless doormat.  The Big 12 is loaded with great basketball teams.  The Baylor Bears, the Kansas Jayhawks, the TCU horned Frogs… heck even Iowa State and West Virginia have gotten into the action as of late…. Kansas State is not among the best teams… They aren’t the best Big 12 team in their own state.  Texas wins basketball games… way more than football games that is for sure.  Still UT isn’t elite in college basketball or the Big 12.  The last decade Texas has been known as an NBA big man incubator… spitting out Centers and Power Forwards into the NBA draft with some regularity.  All these big men are looking to follow in the footsteps of Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Kansas State beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders in their last game which put a stop to a four-game losing streak they were in.  During that losing streak they lost to the Texas Longhorns (already) 70-57.  It was a 13 point loss, which was also a loss ATS which was set at Longhorns -8.  We will see a larger point spread in the rematch.  Earlier this season Kansas State lost buy 1 point to Marquette in a game they were favored by 2 points.  Earlier this year Kansas State beat McNeese State 74-59, which was actually a loss ATS as the Wildcats were 19.5 point favorites… so Kansas State is not to be trusted enough to put money on this season… but what about putting money against in this game?

The Texas Longhorns lost their last game to the Iowa State Cyclones 79-70… it was also a loss ATS which was set at 2.5 in Iowa State’s favor. Texas also took a 64-51 drubbing from the Oklahoma State Cowboys 64-51… which was also a loss against the spread.  The Longhorns are about as reliable as Steve Sarkissian running the bar cart at a golf tournament.  The Longhorns get a break here as the Wildcats are simply not in the same class as the Cyclones or the Cowboys.  6’6 Longhorn forward Timmy Allen who leads the Longhorns in points and rebounds will find what lots of other team leaders have found this season… the Wildcats defensive ability and effort is fine, but they do little else well.

Coaches

Kansas State: Bruce Weber. Coach Weber has been at Kansas State since 2012… he had a much better record as the head coach of Illinois from 2003-2012.  In fact he has won many many awards and they were all for his work at Illinois. At Kansas State he is 179-137.

Texas Longhorns: Chris Beard. Coach Beard is in his first season as the Longhorns hoops coach… it is a great job that pays 5.2 million dollars a year.  That is a fantastic rise for a guy who spent the late 90’s as an assistant coach at North Texas State.  He came over from the Texas Tech Red raiders where he won the AP Coach of the Year Award in 2019 as his team made it to the Final Four.  with a contract this size and not to be coaching football… he will need to show Texas some results in his first  3 seasons.  The clock has started.
