Recent Form:

The Kansas City Royals are 7-3 over their last ten.  A winning couple of weeks that betrays the last place reality that they live in everyday. They logged 3 Overs, 6 Unders and 1 Push in the run.  They beat Seattle 1-0, beat Houston Astros 2-1, swept the Chicago Cubs 3-0, and beat the Houston Astros 2-1 to start it off.  That’s a lot of quality wins if we were just talking about the Astros.  It’s like the 8th grade dance… a lot of chemistry that won’t go anywhere.

The Mariners are 6-4 over their last ten games.  Logging 6 Overs and 4 Unders.

Statistical Comparison:

The Royals are 10th in batting average .244, 24th in runs scored 526, 27th in home runs 128.  They aren’t scoring though they are hitting.  The lineup is a bunch of lone wolves who are swinging to get plucked by another squad in trade or free agency.  Working together is a pipe dream of management. Continuing this trend will see a precipitous drop in record before the final first pitch of the season. They can’t drop much further in the standings but they can stay cold.

The Royals are 23rd in ERA 4.73, 27th in WHIP, 18th in strikeouts 1084.  The rotation here is all over the place.  The team needs a total burndown and restart.  Not by trading away the few good players but by signing whoever is out there that could slightly improve over who they have.

The Mariners are 30th in batting average .223, 23rd in runs scored 537, and 11th in home runs 161.  They are tied with the Cleveland Indians in home runs because they suffer from the same problem. There isn’t a drop of cohesion in the lineup.  They need to find a true lead off batter and get some runners on base to cash in on the home run scoring.  Solo dingers don’t move you up in the win column  unless your pitching staff can pitch shutouts every night.

The Mariners pitchers are 16th in ERA, 14th in WHIP, and 21st in strikeouts.  The entirety of their stats say they are slightly below average of the league… but in a class that is better than the worst teams.  If this squad was in the AL East or the NL West… they would be firmly in last place and wouldn’t have a winning record.  It’s shockingly an easy fix this offseason.  They need 1 smart cut and 1 smart addition on both the lineup and pitching.

Royals vs Mariners Game Preview:

This contest isn’t quite an American League battle.  The Mariners have a winning record and they are winners… but stuck in 3rd place.  The Royals are circling the drain without a hope to grab anything other than giving young guys quality starts.  Which of course means raining the upper level seats with homers and tanking the team ERA.

The Royals will start right-hander Carlos Hernandez 4-1, 3.97 ERA, 60 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched, 1.31 WHIP.  The 24 year old made his debut on the MLB mound in Sept of 2020.  He is very promising with a trong arm and enough accuracy to average a strikeout per inning pitched in the major 73/73.  He is still very green with a couple more home games than road games under his belt.  He should get rocked.  When he is 27 we will sing his praises but right now he should get rocked.

The Mariners will go to the mat with one of their lefties Tyler Anderson.  I wouldn't but they will.  Tyler is 6-8, 4.07 ERA, 105 strikeouts in 130 innings pitched.  He is a reliable vet that came over from the Colorado Rockies pitching staff.  The 31 year old is not spectacular, but given run support he is an easy win in this matchup. His nickname is Mr. Duck… because he went to Oregon… and you think football players are dumb?!

Notable quotes:

“Uggghhhh… Are we good now?”  My Kansas City pal after Whit Merrifield’s grand slam home run last game… to extend a toothless win streak.

“[Kikuchi] was getting outs,... But I saw the game changing and I tried to give Joe a chance to get us out of it. It just didn't happen tonight.”  -Mariners manager Scott Servais about Yusei Kikuchi dropping game 1 of this Royals vs mariners series.
