Hawaii - San Diego State preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Hawaii: lost 45-26 at New Mexico State
San Diego State: lost 35-13 at Boise State

There may not be a worse matchup in the Mountain West Conference this week than the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors looking for something to cheer about, against the San Diego State Aztecs who probably just need a hug because all the Aztecs can do is beat the likes of Toledo and Idaho State.

But it’s not like Hawaii has done any better in recent memory. This is a group that lost to Vanderbilt in its first game of the season by 53 points, and the only win on the register is against Duquesne back on Sept. 17. The Rainbow Warriors went into their bye week fresh off a 45-26 loss to New Mexico State, so they’ve had a chance to stew over how bad it’s been.

Hawaii took a 7-0 lead but nothing else materialized after that. They gave up 353 rushing yards in what was an absolute display of horrid run defense. New Mexico State had jumped all the way out to a 35-10 lead and the game never lasted after that. Hawaii quarterback Braden Schager actually had a decent game going 22 of 39 for 261 yards and a touchdown. But there’s not much more to actually like when it comes to a Hawaii offense. Especially when the defense is giving up as much as it is. Let’s put it this way: If you’re allowing the opposing running back to hit for 144 yards on just 11 carries, you might need to reassess the situation in life.

But think of it this way if you’re Hawaii: There’s no way San Diego State knows how to run that well to make things problematic for Hawaii. The Aztecs’ offense isn’t going to be able to make anything work out of this. The Aztecs are coming off a 35-13 loss to Boise State in which San Diego State had a grand total of 114 total yards. Surely, Hawaii is quivering in its boots with that lack of offense.

San Diego State quarterback Braxton Burmesiter was just 2 of 8 for 33 yards and an interception. And that’s quite literally all the offense could do. There was no establishing of running the ball, no nothing. It was just an abhorrent display of offense that we can only hope will never be shown again. Sounds like a Brady Hoke-ran offense.

Prediction

If you have enough money to slam the under on this week, we’d advise that you’d do that. I’m also not saying it won’t end in a 3-0 game, but it might at this point. Hawaii by 3
