Season Record
Packers: 1-1 NFC North
49ers:  2-0  NFC West

Once again Aaron Rodgers will face the team that passed on him in the Draft for Alex Smith.  It was a costly mistake.  Aaron Rodgers has spent well over a decade as one of the best NFL quarterbacks to ever strap on cleats… and the Niners have had a roller coaster of ups and downs in the QB position…. Which is currently headed for a loop-d-loop with oft-injured Jimmy Garoppolo leading the offense while Rookie Tray Lance waits in the wings.   The NFL season is going into week 3, strap in for GB vs SF!

Packers vs 49ers Preview and Analysis

Recent Form
The Packers opened with a big loss to the New Orleans Saints, 38-3.  People were calling it the worst game Aaron Rodgers ever played.  People were saying it was confirmation of the Lambeau Field leadership drafting Jordan Love in anticipation of moving off of an ancient Aaron Rodgers…. Then week 2 happened and the Pack beat the Detroit Lions 35-17 and the same people started saying that Aaron was back!... It was all just a matter of knocking off the off-season rust and now Green Bay must be Super Bowl bound!...  The season is young.  Good teams lose occasionally, bad teams win occasionally (except the Jets).

San Fran is 2-0.  They opened with a high scoring matchup against the Detroit Lions 41-33.  Game two brought the seriously dysfunctional Philadelphia Eagles, who took forever to commit to Jalen Hurts as their starting quarterback, and got the second win 17-11.

Offensive Analysis

The Packers are scoring 19 points a game, bottom 5 in the league.  They are gaining 297.5 yards per game.  They have lots and lots of room for improvement.  Aaron Rodgers had that awful opener which now has him facing the lowest stats in the first two games of a season in over a decade.  He is 37-55 for 388 yards, 4 td, 2 INTs.  RB Aaron Jones has been nearly invisible with 22 carries and only 76 yards…  That’s a lowly 3.5 yards per carry, almost Ezekiel Elliot bad.  He will need to pick it up.  Davante Adams is always wonderful, he has 13 catches for 177 yards and just needs more targets as the season moves forward.

Jimmy Garoppolo is playing great, he’s 39-55, 503 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.  He leads a team that is scoring 29 points per game on 378 yards per game.  The offensive line has only given up 1 sack.  Tight-end super star George Kittle is off to a slow start with only 47 yards per game… but with extra time in the pocket Jimmy hasn’t needed to dump the ball off as much this year so far.

Defensive Analysis

Green Bay’s defense is giving up 27.5 points per game and 338 yards per game.  They got spanked in that Game 1 and will have to live it down with solid play.  To be fair the offense kept putting the defense back on the field in game 1, and they got worn out.  Against the Lions and Jared Goff GB’s D looked fine.  These stats will repair as the season goes on

The 49ers defense is holding opponents to 22 points a game and have gotten 5 sacks.  They did that against the Lions and Eagles… so don’t hold them to those numbers if someone good comes a callin’.

Packers vs 49ers Prediction
Our prediction for Sunday, September 26th is… Packers 35  49ers  17.

The Packers aren’t the Eagles or the Lions.  Yes, they struggled in Game 1.  Aaron will get up for the 49ers, his ability to hold grudges is legendary… plus it’s about the time in the season that Jimmy should be limping off the field with a sprain or muscle pull.

NFL Betting Trends

San Francisco went 7-9-0 ATS last season.
Green Bay won 10 games against the spread last season, while failing to cover six times.
Green Bay went over the total in five of eight away games last season.
At home last season, San Francisco had two wins against the spread and was 1-7 overall.

Key Injuries

49ers:  Emmanuel Moseley CB Doubtful  *  Dre Greenlaw  LB  Out
Pack:  Vernon Scott  S  Out  *

Players to Watch

Green Bay:  Marcedes Lewis, this great TE is now 37 years old.  He has 1 catch on the season for 19 yards. The UCLA legend that was drafted in 2006 should be targeted early and often to open up the field for everyone else.  He has some good games left in those legs… get him the ball.

49ers:  DE Nick Bosa.  7 tackles and 3 SACKS!  Nick is off to a great start and he is the reason Aaron Rodgers should get rid of the ball quickly.  Fred Warner leads the team in tackles (18) but Nick Bosa leads the team in scaring the opposing offense.

Notable Quotes

“I studied every potential Xs and Os play and issue possible. I spent my whole life working on that. My goal was that any question a player could have about anything on the field, I'd be able to answer it.”  - Kyle Shanahan, from Wikipedia.

Coaches:
Packers:  Matt LaFleur, a young coach in the Sean McVay mold who lost all credibility by begging for Aaron Rodgers to return to the team. No one will benefit more from Aaron’s eventual leaving… then he can start looking like the guy in charge.

49ers: Kyle Shanahan.  Kyle is the son of a famous, successful football coach.  It totally isn’t the definition of privilege that at 41 years old he is in his fourth season coaching the San Francisco 49ers.

Weather Forecast

Partly Cloudy.  75% humidity.  Wind 11 mph.  70*  that will drop to 54*  throughout the game.
